The US have many alternatives, many of which are pain compliance based, which TASER isn't. I have experienced TASER and find it very effective. The splurge guns which fire glue are really stuff of Sci-Fi, as are the net throwing guns and the small bags full of sand. The only option I would consider is the TASER. It is referred to locally as "less lethal", which just means "less dead", which is rubbish. The Burrows report calls these weapons less than lethal, which is a more correct phrase; weapons that are not intentionally deadly.
