As in impartial observer having heard the opinion from both sides I recommend that if you have come into the industry from a civilian background then focus on the UK and European market start at the bottom, listen and learn. Passing a driving test means that I have learned to pass the test, the reality is that I have to learn to drive! Place that template on completing the SIA course then you will understand where the guys are coming from.
On the hostile environments there has been a general shift to recruit ex-military for the following reasons:
A military background instills a greater sense of military situations, to understand when it begins to deteriorate and deal with it intuitively as a team. I agree that it shouldn't hinder an applicant but the people who recruit particularly to fill slots in that kind of environment are of the belief that these are the people they will favour.
Blackwater is still reeling from recent events and like it or not they and more importantly the training providers are accountable for the individuals the level of training and people who are supplied.
Whilst you are waiting get yourself skills that are useful such as medical training or advanced driving skills.
Start at the bottom, work hard and be professional!
