Plenty of people in Manama city, Bahrain, have driven across from Riyadh for the weekend but don't forget it's traditionally Friday and Saturday, going through a process of change in Bahrain in order to gain one day's more business with the West. Suppose it's about 250m but with no congestion you'll cover the ground easily. Go careful with the traffic coming out of Bahrain, lot of road deaths due to alcohol availability and some very powerful cars indeed.
These weekenders find it a respite after working in Saudi all week, sort of like a sandy but sober Salisbury Plain run by the Don't Enjoy Yourself Police. IN fact, just like Salisbury Plain.
First stop in Bahrain will have to be the British Club, let the locals check you over, once they're happy they are the font of all knowledge and will tell you where it's at. Stay at the Gulf Hotel (London prices) just once, be pampered and treated like a king while you find your feet. You'll find kindred souls in the subterranean bar, all very quietly spoken.
If a pretty Thai lady asks you to escort her into a hotel because she is shy, do not believe her. She is a man.
