You can apply without actually having your certificates but you need the reference number off them as this needs to go on the form. Showsec should be able to give you this.
Your checks will take the same length of time as anyone else regardless of what checks anyone might have done before, if you lived abroad they take longer, if there's anything on your record such as a 10 year old caution, it will take longer.
Was the person who got one in 6 weeks a recent applicant. At the moment they are taking a few months, some people have been waiting since November.
