As we all know sometimes the work between tasks can be a little bit dry - does anyone else 'top up' their income by working in the AT sector as well.
I'm fortunate enough to use my quals in the overseas expeditions business and also coach/guide in the British Mountains, it helps pay the bills, releive stress and keep fit. Anyone else do the same ???

Cheers Starlight, good quals mate.
No real cunning plan....yet. !! (i wish, ha,ha) I first trained and entered the CP business over a decade ago and realised then I would need to have another feather (or 2) in my cap, I'm ML and remote exped medicine qualified and worked in the telly/media/corporate feilds as well. I've never come across any other guys who are CP operaters and legit AT professionals working solely in the UK(perhaps I should keep it under my hat) as well, perhaps Starlight mate - your the first !! - I know Dodger is an SA Feild Guide, he is also the only Brit I know to do this!! As I said before, I think the two feilds of expertise have a synergy for obvious reasons Cheers Sealgair |

I'm ML summer and winter, SPA, MIA trainee, booked for my snowboard instructors course and have a large nordic skiing/aid climbing background.
Have done alot of alpine style climbing in french/swiss/italian alps. Have done a few new, no doubt unheard of routes. I like to kick it hardcore when it comes to big climbs. Just such a shame I'm a big bastard |

Its all about getting out there and having fun if you ask me. Most the guys I've climbed with all over the world haven't done any courses. All self taught and learned from others around them. Corporate fun, labelling it, removes the fun if you ask me. I've come across a few so called experts in my time, because they've done a recognised course. Personally I think its time spent in the mountains, hills and wildernesses of the world that truelly enhances you with the knowledge. Conrad Anker for example hasn't done any recognised courses yet he's one of the worlds best. Its about getting out there, having fun and enjoying your surroundings, be it hanging off the North Face of the Eiger or having a day out in Glencoe. Enjoying whats there in front of your eyes and above all, its free!

Take the bushcraft/survival industry in the UK for example, full of wannabes teaching skills that they have either read in a book, watched on the telly or learnt on a 'see monkey-do monkey' weekender and never actually applied for real in the environments under real life experience. Mate, what I was asking in this thread was...."As we all know sometimes the work between tasks can be a little bit dry - does anyone else 'top up' their income by working in the AT sector as well."....and to work in the mainstream outdoor industry that usually requires qualifications mate, especially where mountains and water and young people are concerned. I personally have the upmost respect for my peers who have worked hard to gain their mountain/canoe quals to do this and invested in themselves, they have acheived and passed a particular standard and in some countries in the world it's illegal to charge money for services without these qualifications. Also bearing in mind people working in this part of the adventure training industry aren't qualified after a 2 week course, the training and assessment systems in place are more drawn out and are experience based and not 'death by powerpoint and slideshow' packages either. cheers for your input everyone, good to see guys using their other skills sets to pay the bills in the dry spells.....when you've also got a young family to support you can't sit back between jobs and wait around for the illusive 'dream job' to rock in. cheers Sealgair |
