Hi,
has anyone read the book by Kevin Horak called 'The New Bodyguard'? I see that Mark Rowe interviewed Kevin about the book (article in February's edition of Professional Security, pp. 51-56). Is it worth 25 GBP? Regards Frank |

i bought it on my last rotation, its not so much a read but an instruvtional pamplet for people joining the buisiness, its well laid and a lot of info in it, but i think £25 is a bit steep, another similar type book is the profesional bodyguard by peter consterdine

You also can try "The art of Executive Protection" and "Executive Protection: New Solutions for a new era" by Robert L. Oatman. I read both (the second is an update of the first) and they are great books for the novel and the veteran EP specialist.
Also try the Executive Protection Specialist Handbook by Jerry Glazebrook. This little handbook is all about the check lists you´ll need in EP work and it is so small you can carry it in your pocket for "on-the- job" references. Hope this help Taipan. |

I bought the original a few years back and a bloody good read it was too. I see it's been re-released with a shiny new cover on it.

Thanks for the comments on this string. I have bought and reviewed both of Oatman’s books and I like his concept of predictive planning. The down side (for me studying UK based CP) is that this is mainly US based and deals with weapons etc. Nonetheless, a recommended read; if you buy the new one you don’t need the old one.
I have just ordered the Jackie’s book and look forward to reading it when it arrives; I’m keen to hear the female perspective of the ‘Circuit’. I have also just received a free copy of Kevin’s book so this is the next for review. Another publication that I have read is Geoff Padgem’s Close Protection: The Softer Skills. This is a good read and really concentrates on planning, protocol and situational awareness. Coming from an R&D Protection Squad background, he is keen to emphasis the prevention rather than reaction. He underlines the importance of ‘hard-skills’ (such as driving, shooting, unarmed combat) but balances this against the need to ‘plan-out’ the requirement to use these skills. Before the guys in Iraq or Afghanistan comment, Geoff is all about CP in the UK and non war-fighting areas. It’s a good read – I recommend it. Buy it from Entertainments Technology Press (www.etnow.com). I have also read Peter Consterdine’s book but this is more of a training manual; useful all the same. Regards Frank |

I live and work in Mexico . Mexican laws prohibits civilians to carry ANY kind of firearm (included security personnel). Only former police or army are allow to carry. I use Oatman´s principles of "advance work" and in my opinion those principles can be applied almost every where (well..maybe not in the sand box)
Stay safe Taipan. |
