From analysis of Palestinian suicide attacks against Israeli targets, the profile of a typical bomber portrays a single, young male, who is fanatically religious and embraces the extremist Islamic promise of a martyr's place in heaven. This profile has begun to change, with bombers now ranging in age from teens to middle-aged individuals with families and established careers. The ranks of suicide volunteers are also no longer only restricted to males. Women have played a role in suicide bombings in Afghanistan, Israel, and Sri Lanka.

The first recorded suicide bombing carried out by a female in this region was in Southern Lebanon, 1985.

Agreed MTS, Thenmuli Rajatnam, the bomber who murdered Rajiv Ghandi was female, in 1991??? The profiles being used by the US Mil for a while was as described above and was restricted for the purpose of Iraq, even there that profile has changed as there have been several suicide Bombings committed by females at the IPS school in Baghdad for instance and that was 3 yrs ago.

In the past the first recorded use of a suicide bomber (female) as we would classify it today was in 1985 in Palestine , Sana Mehaidli. and children as young as 16 yrs have also been utilized in the conflict such as Issa Bdeir again in Palestine. In Sri Lanka female suicide bombers have accounted for between 30 and 45% of the Tamil Tigers successful bombings against govt targets since 1991.

As stated by MTS, at present no accurate classification for the profile of a suicide bomber exists.

The attack was in Southern Lebanon against and Israeli convoy. I actually had the opportunity to have a former soldier that was in the convoy in one of my security classes (not SD) a few months back. He's no spring chicken, but hey, i don't choose them, i just teach them :-).

wish I could say I am full of smarts but it is a subject we cover in the HECPO and I recently gave the lecture to a class... sooooooo looks like my recollection of the region was actually a bit poor!!!
