So China has allegedly spent 13 billion dollars on "unprecedented security" for these Olympic Games. 300,000 cameras, guards, soldiers and informants everywhere. All to show the world that terrorists will not disrupt the games in that country. Yet, American tourists get cut up while visiting a popular tourist attraction. Reports are that you can't walk 10 steps without bumping into some security type, but a "lone, disturbed" man can pull out a knife, cut up some foreigners then, remarkably, commit suicide.

All in all, I would have to say that I'm unimpressed with the level of real security there. Unfortunately, this is how most countries handle security. Throw money and massive amounts of manpower at a problem (real or imagined) and allow the more common low tech crimes to continue hardly abated.

Street crimes, IED's and suicide bombers are not extremely sophisticated. Whatever happened to simple observation and profiling? I know, profiling is bad, but it works. A "disturbed" individual gives off some apparent signs, unfortunately they are usually discovered after they commit some horrible act. In retrospect, law enforcement studies the case and says, "aha, there was the sign we should have picked up on!"

Meanwhile, 300,000 cctv cameras will continue to record a typical day in the life.

Rant over.
