On a little light hearted note, I always been a big believer on basing things on pen#s size, I want a bigger one than the other guy.

"YOU are the weapon, anything else that you use is just a tool"
Failing that, I'd have an Apache Longbow with agood mate at the controls

Guys,
I've been "off air" for the past month due to a heavy overseas travel schedule and only getting to see this thread now. One of our instructors, Jerry MacCauley is a certified TASER instructor and has a shockingly good knowledge (sorry, just couldn't resist) of the lightning sticks. We are actually looking at incorporating them into some E.P. details. I'll have him weigh in soonest. Cheers. |

Hi Gent’s;
Just a quick one on the TASER, I’m a certified TASER instructor also, and have recently been speaking to TASER International HQ and they have told be that the NEW! 12 Gauge TASER round (XREP;eXtended Range Electronic Projectile) will be available late 2008 early 2009 for T&E. For those not in the know about it, basically it’s a TASER shrunk down to the size of a 12 gauge with the same knock down ability. Deployable from a shotgun… Take a look at their website for updated details. Stay Safe H61

My primary weapon is effective use of enviorment #1 one of the first lessons instructed in impact weapons is that everything around you harder than your fist is a potential "impact weapon"
Laws certainly play a serious role in selection of primary weapons in mexico and south america law sincerely depends on your client and his status . In mexico city we were simply handed very old colt 1911 's that had scene better days . When we flew into columbia we were handed mac 11's stamped us govt property (lol) . While it does not sit well with many my primary close range weapon of choice is the blade . While firearms are certainly beyond important training in blade and impact weapons to a level of instinct is essential becouse you will have them in nearly every scenario you can imagine . Another very important aspect of training for CP is firearms disarms and retention I trained and trained my entire life as my father designed many of the courses used by canadian militry and law enforcement agencies . About 7 years ago I in defence of a client in vancouver in a home invasion found myself looking down the barrel of a .40 SW in a instant that instinct surfaced and I dissarmed the home invader , I have a powder burn scar shaped like the ejector port of the .40 on my right arm and in the disarm the bad guy took a round in his foot . But the client and I walked away I knew from his voice on the phone something was wrong and walked into the situation . My point is that Close protection training starts like all things at the walking level and other skills are so important and save lives . Its always interesting when I do seminars with arogant folks on firearms disarms and retention all the illusions of power get snatched from them in a instance when they assume they have control of a situation with a firearm the 1.3 meter rule is something they soon learn . Everything around has the potential to be used as a tool of defence and protection . Paintball guns with CS gas can be effective legal alternative also . What I dont like about tasers is that they make people lazzy and trigger happy and they kill people weekly becouse they are overused and abused . I would certainly use CS or a PR 24 before 50k volts Thanks for listening to my rant C-scott |

The XREP (wireless TASER round) will really be a nice addition to your less-lethal arsenal. The rounds will go for about $100USD a piece and, my favorite feature, a 30 second ride and 100 foot range. If they could put that in a pistol...ah, to dream!
Halo, are you guys training with the C2? And if our brothers and sisters in the UK could weigh in; does there seem to be a future for TASER in the CP/PPS arena there? Or is it still treated like voodoo? |

C-Scott, just as an aside aboutthe TASER (John, you got me started on this topic), the death-from-TASER thing is not accurate, use of Less-Lethal is not laziness and, trigger happy can be said of many folks in the public/private protection field. I don't blame the tools. It's a well researched issue within my area of expertise and not merely an opinion.
You did, however, make an excellent point about weapon retention. It should be required of anyone who is licensed to carry any type of weapon. And, of course you were dead on with training comment. |
