And having witnessed their 'training' I am not surprised... The UK Police Services are lagging far behind many other nations Law Enforcement agencies in self defense/unarmed combat/physical intervention or whatever you wish to call it this week... Much of the training is of poor quality, both content and instructoral ability (sorry for spelling but I have a few gins inside me!)

I understand they are improving, even, at long last, looking at Krav Maga, but I think they have a long way to go before they get close to many other nations standards..

frankfarmer is on a distinguished road
What a fantastic thread! I applaud Rich H and Scab for an informative exchange of views and enjoyed the read. I have actually read Rich H’s full document as part of my own research for my Uni dissertation. I enjoyed Scab’s comments and can see both points of view.

Whilst I am an experienced CPO myself, I fully understand the need for Continuous Professional Development and believe we can all learn from others (even if it is watching someone do it wrong and taking a mental note not to copy their actions) and use this experience to polish our own service.

My philosophy has always been to ‘run away and live to fight another day’. I believe we should have some form of ‘fend off’ skills to create enough time for the Principal, CPO and other team members to move away from the danger. ‘Running’ is a term I use to move away as quickly as required to prevent the aggressor from harming your Principal.

When researching what was the best ‘methodology’ to use (judo, karate, etc etc – I am not an expert in any form of Martial Art and hated walking up and down a gym practicing my ‘forward block’ during my initial training) I was amazed at how many differing forms there were.

Keep it simple, make it quick and remember the impact your actions may have to the Principal’s reputation. Proportionality is also a significant factor; always remember the phrase – reasonable force…

I’m only talking about the UK commercial market here.
