As I originally stated, safe gun handling is as important as making the decision to deploy, as well as access. Any argument about the ultimate purpose of a firearm is academic and usually done hypothetically. Those professionals who actually make a living being armed have long ago come to terms with that awesome responsibility.

jmac
i was thinking the same thing this week when i heard this incident had happened. Having spent many years as a firearms instructor and having been taught to shoot by my grandfather when I was young. Even that many years ago i remember as a kid reading on the box of that rifle the following points: 1. All guns are always loaded, unless verified otherwise. 2. Never point the muzzle at anything you do not wish to destroy. 3. Keep your finger off the trigger and outside the trigger guard until ready to fire. 4. Be aware of your target, backstop and beyond. In the states they call this an accidental discharge. This is a false statement as it is not an accidental discharge. The first rule of weapons All guns are always loaded is as true now as they ever were. I know of several incidents in the states where police officers shot themselves, co workers, trainers/instructors shooting their students etc. Weapons simply are not to be played with for one moment. Just one fraction of a second of stupidity costs lives when weapons are involved. Weapons are to be respected to the highest degree without fail. When it is disrespected things like this happen. The person involved is very lucky to have survived given the current security levels in Israel and the fact that a previous suicide during the departure of a head of state recently. Tapmaster |

I've learned to take those types of comments with a grain of salt. usually it's a Walt or someone who knows very little about working with a firearm. It always sounds impressive to make those kinds of replies I guess. The most important thing to remember is that firing a gun is never an accident. Either we meant to pull the trigger or we didn't. That makes it neglliegence or justified.
Few of these posters are ever going to have to fire a weapon at anything more formidable than a paper target anyway. Jerry |

I've worked for an Israeli Security company - many years ago on contract... and I would rather run naked through the streets covered in vaseline at a gay pride event - than suffer an ND at Ben Gurion!
Having been a weapons instructor in a former life, in my humble opinion, there is no such thing as an "Accidental" discharge. And I echo the sentiments of jmacauley.. the word "Negligent" is far more accurate and discriptive. If you don't know the state of your weapon, and can't carry one safely - DON'T. There are no half measures with weapons. I'd love to have sat in on the debrief though, when the guilty party had to account for the incident!
