johnbramhall is on a distinguished road
what the point of doing a cpo course and the sia turning you down on a minor offence not even for violence that happened 2 years ago even when my mate has done 2 tours of irac british army and still on reservist list ready to go again for his country and cant get licence of goverment to bodyguard some one.
before you spend £3000 you should be able to get in touch with the sia and see if you will pass the vetting procedure, i would rather spend £245
on a pre-check then if any problems can be sorted out before you spend money on a cpo course.
the point of this is you can serve your country countles times and would serve again only for them to say no to some one who deserves something back of his country.
i no its procedure and thats right to keep idiots out but this should be standard procedure before you spend any money. any feed back or help for my mate would be gratefull

Hi,

Unfortunately the sia does provide that service, if you go on there web site you can see what are your chances of getting a licence if you have a criminal record.

Now don't get me wrong, i think that the SIA is a complete farce and run by a bunch of ............................., the less said the better.

Best thing to do is to appeal there decision, i had that problem and after a long fight eventualy got my licence.

All the best.

littlewoman will become famous soon enough
The criminality checker on the sia website will give you an indicator but isn't totally reliable. The idea of being able to get the vetting part of the license process sorted out before spending money on a course has been suggested to them but they weren't interested. That may be down to the way the legislation was set up rather than anything they have control over.
Your mate needs to appeal getting as many people in responsible positions as possible to write a reference saying what a good person he is. It also helps to explain any mitigating factors surrounding the conviction and using any evidence that might be available (court papers, local news reports etc.) Whilst it will be good to get references from his commanding officers, it would be a good idea to also get references from outside the military if possible. The SIA don't seem to understand the concept that violence may at some times be necessary and feel that every situation can be dealt with by talking nicely to people. So it would be good to get references that say things other than what a good soldier he was. (I'm not in any way suggesting that being a good soldier should go against him, I'm just saying that the SIA take a very naive view on what qualities are needed to do security jobs.)

Anyone can get a CRB done, just google it and you will find a few places that will do one for a fee, know that may be a pain in the arse but its a small price to pay before you shell out on a £3k course and if you have doubts then possibly not a waste of money.

I'd say you'd be hard pushed to find anyone who is a fan of the sia but they are very open and clear about the policy of criminal convictions/ cautions and the like on their website.

They do have an appeal process as yoda has mentioned already, but i'd dread to think what kind of time frame you are looking at. And sadly wether you have served your country or not for however many years, their policy is clearly stated.

Do most (or any) of the CPO course do a criminal background check before allowing you to take the course?

Hi,

Ref CRB, all you need to to is go to your nearest police station they will provide you with the form or address to write to and it will cost you £10.00. Derpending were you have lived it could take a bit longer. Like if you have resided in NI, you will have to get a CRB check from the PSNI, strange but true.

Ref the appeal it took me nearly 24 months to get my licence and i had to apply tewicw for my licence. the first time i applied the appeal got turned down and i allowed the period of 24 months from the date of the offence (military offence) and re-applied and this time it got turned down again so i appealed and the decision got turned over and i got my licence.

And like littlewoman mention get as many character references from companies that you have worked for (civy street), if possible from the CO or OC and from a solicitor if you had one deal with the offence. Explain the circumstances and how the events developed.

Thats talking now from a personnal experience.

Hope it helps you.

Also excellent advice littlewoman. One of the good things about this forum.

I don't know of any courses that request a CRB Jerry, but it is part of the sia requirement for a licence, and i do know that some companies especially those in the sandy places request a CRB before taking a person on, not sure about UK, never ben asked for one myself

We try our best to make candidates aware, but no..... we do not run a CRB on them........it would be nice to be able to but the question might be..... is that the responsibility of the trainer? remember that it also goes to course costs!!
