Good points, well made, especially about the 'drip' factor, it does, in my experience, spread amongst a team particularly if those tasked with leadership are weak. The training side of life should always be tempered with the attitude 'that if it can go wrong, it probably will' or as you rightly put it 'shit will happen'!

PMA counts for a lot especially when you have had a load of 'knock backs', in most cases you just have to keep plugging away and maintaining a sense of humour, because if you lose that, you also tend to lose your sense of perspective, which is not healthy.

Lets be very honest here, there are an awful lot of people chasing very few jobs, so anything that you can do to stand out from the crowd and get you noticed, may lead to that all important 'foot in the door', face it, no one starts off driving a Formula 1 car, even Lewis Hamilton started off with radio controlled models ! Me? I started as Victor Meldrew and never really improved!

Good post Ken, Mr Meldrew part gave me a chuckle ....

A lot of applicants that we receive are not qualified for the positions they wish to be considered for. A lot think that possession of an sia License makes them on the same footing as someone who has 20 yrs experience.... SIA Qual should be seen as a 'education' certificate and treated as same... most of those who drip see festival work, Rst , Static etc as beneath them and as such crow on about work... I know of a few on this site that have identified the wood from the trees and realize that they need to work their way up the ladder.... after all to level University and expect a job as a CEO on your first start with no work history nor reputation would be unlikely.... point taken???

Do your hard yards and then aim higher up when you have friends in the industry and a reputation/work history to back it all up, dripping disqualifies!!!

Soap box .... gone

I'm not entirely sure if I understood above properly, and if it was aimed at me, but just to make it clear I did write what I wrote earlier to gain anybody's sympathy and compassion, I did it to say that "if finding a job wil be 'hard' then I dont care, 'cause it's nothing new to me". This is probably going to be a "rude awakening" for some, but I've already got this punch from live about 4-5 years ago and recovered since then, this round is mine

Don't think this was 'aimed' at you mate, more at previous posts and previous threads, from some people who were, how can I put this diplomatically......not as well motivated as you! Better known in the trade as w**kers!

Ken, I enjoy my living in UK, but must admit that the social system here is very protective,
and instead of making people enterprising it makes them sit and wait, so that will be probably part of the problem you just described so politely
Give them fishing rod not the fish!

Morrigan no bad feeling I thought I might have got it wrong :-P

A protective social system? Marian, you must have qualifications in diplomacy as well! If you gave half the 'numpties' here a fishing rod, A, they would use it to commit a crime or B, sell it to buy dope....okay I will get back into my cave now!

Well, hopefully the above doesn't apply to the community of this forum and I can park my bike here safely
Regarding diplomacy, well apparently I'm not very good at this, I still put honesty in front of politeness and call things by their names, but hey I will improve, I'm learning from the best after all, Great Britain has a long history of diplomacy

Miriam, complete your course and give Bob a call, I beleive he contacted you before? If so, then take up his offer to get your foot in the door. Use some of your earnings from your first jobs to gain different skill sets...female Surveillance operators for instance don't seem to be out of work for long periods.

I wish you all the best.

To others thinking of entering this industry:

I believe if new comers look around at different threads the story becomes quite clear. The industry is saturated, the bubble has burst and jobs are hard to come by (but not impossible). Myself and others give this advice only so people can see both sides of the story, we have been in this industry for years and tell you from personal experience. We are working, but always advise others to think very carefully before parting with hard earned cash.

We are not a training provider, but would ask you to question as to why most positive responses seem to be from training providers, whereas most "negative" comments about the state of the industry come from experienced employed operators on the ground? Our advice is freely given, but will always be counter acted by training providers as obviously they need to fill slots...just laws of economics.

Just another point, the advertising space on this site is taken up mostly by training providers. Not a problem, but of course business is business and a comment detrimental to a training company's potential profit line will attract a combined response from those firms.

Now, the problem also sits with new comers who do not perform due diligence, good market research and possible employment prospects before starting a course. Many seem to float around afterwards asking "Where are all the jobs then?" Check the other threads for these kind of responses. Most aren't Numpties, some have relevant experience etc, but the common problem is that they are out of work.

I wish all who enter this industry the very best, but please realise the market is flooded. The reason it's flooded is due to training providers churning them through the schools at a tremendous rate. Ask others who are not training providers if you think i am wrong.

Regards

Shakes
