With the rise in gun crime in the UK, does anyone think that Bodyguards should once again be able to carry firearms in the UK.?

I find the timing of your thread very interesting.. I have just been tasked to research the rise in robberies in the UK by my chairman and in this early stage of the procedings I have noticed a marked increase in certain types of weapons, but also a marked decrease in others!
One part of your post perplexs me though.. Your statement about allowing 'bodyguards' to carry firearms AGAIN... By again are your refering to the periods of history when there was no legislation for ANYONE regarding firearms? |

In my opinion only crown agencies should carry firearms in the UK, my main reason for this is competency and standards that have to be achieved are difficult to enforce on a commercial basis.
If there is sufficient risk to an individuals safety armed police protection has and will be given. Gang culture is the rise in armed/violent crime, when young black youth see one of their peirs turning up in their estate in an BMW M5, with a good looking girl and a wad of cash, then this youth is going to want to get the same by unlawful means if nessassary rather than being a teacher, postman or soldier. Gang culture gives the youths identity and a support structure similar to the comeraderie (I apologise for the spelling) in the army. |

Whilst 'cp' course contained firearms training, private sector security have never been able to carry anything different to any other private individual..

With gun crime rising, the people that should worry are the police...
In some states in the US there are laws that allows for concealed carry, and if you need/want to carry as a CPO 'over there', you need to posess a liscence like this. However, I think that if you're working in a situation high risk enough to warrant the carrying of weapons, you should hand it over to the police. The same discussion appears from time to time up here as well. With so many course providers and course attendees, not all up to standards unfortunately, there's bound to be someone messing things up. That's just my two cents...now I'm off for some scoff Laters Si |

The right to self defence is one thing - and look how often that goes wrong! He/She was coming at me in an aggressive manner, so I hit out. He/she hit me so I slapped them back, wasn't my fault they fell down the stairs, slipped on a wet floor and banged their head.
We've all seen the arguments for Civi Police to be armed. Most recent Jean Charles de Menezes, Nicholas Gaubert http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/west_yorkshire/7096456.stm , vis a vis Pc Katie Johnson 31 dec 07 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/lancashire/7165660.stm , or Pc Sharon Beshenivsky , Nov 2005 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/bradford/4451508.stm . If and when that happens, who would be next ? Customs, Prison Officers, debt collectors, traffic wardens? We live in a society now, where we have half and half Police officers. PCSOs. God bless them, for I wouldnt walk the street, in uniform, put myself in as a pacifier without proper form of restraint, stick and cuffs or CS gas. But these are all done for a reason. If those whom we trust ( armed police etc ) make mistakes, that's because they/we are human and therefore our brain rhythms changes from day to day. We get tired, confused, stressed & pissed the list is endless. Messages misinterpreted all cause to confusion. I've worked the streets for many years and in all forms of service, seen the many types of characters come through. Out of all those I’ve worked with, it maybe a very sad thing to say, but only very few I’d trust with a sidearm. Training is one thing, but if you give the right to arms to one, then it must be to all. Because I know, if that very very obvious CP/BG in a big puffer jacket is carrying and for sure, he's just a hired hand the night, but managed to get his CP badge somehow - then I'd want one my glock with me to neutralise him if necessary ! We have to learn by the mistakes of our cousins across the waters. After all, we are inherent of their problems, but it would seem very difficult to learn how to fix them and not many have tried to stop it.
