All,

I am seriously contemplating doing some form of study (security industry related) with a view to gaining a formal qualification that will help me, in the future, get onto the management ladder.

I have an abundance of practical experience, especially in the CP environment and am willing to continue putting in the 'hard yards' while I study. I know this is a long termgoal but, it pays to plan ahead!

I would welcome any views and advice from the abundance of talent on this site.

Regards

Leicester Uni have the world reknowned 'Scarman Centre' and I was accepted on the MSc in Security and Risk Management last year (starting last Feb). It's a 2 yr course if you do it part time and looks like a great qualification to back up practical experience. I thought I'd be able to do it in my spare time whilst working abroad but no-way, you need access to the library, internet and loads of reference material. Their advice to me was to come back when I had more time, so I sacked the first module without writing a word, lost a grand but have the option to return within 2 yrs to start the course again if I want to. If you have the time do this course, it costs about 6K in total but is well recognised. Just make sure you have the time to study and the access to all the materials.

Bucks New University (formerley BNU) have a course in protective Security management, you time spent in CP will count towards APL. Some CP companies are running a Security management Course. i see Longmoor Group have a page on their site for it, but it is blank. I would give them a call visit Longmoor Group - Home

I hold an Msc in Risk and Security Management (from the renowned seat of learning Leciester University!!!)

I have found it in good stead and it is the main reason for me being succesful when applying for my current position...

I would agree with Neil about the MSc at Leicester. If the cost, which can be split into to parts is affordable, then they recommend you are able to do 14hrs of studying a week. Due to work thats not always possible and you are playing catch up at the weekends, when you may want quality time doing other things, family? This is effectively a full free time commitment. You may also wish to consider a qualification through the American Society of Industrial Security (ASIS) called the CPP, Certified Protection Professional. As the name suggests this is an American organisation with Chapters all over the world, inc UK. This is seen as very much a practical qualification for the Security Manager, and well recognised by the US companies. Worth considering.

Whilst I understand peoples points about the MSc being difficult to fit in, i would ay it is well worth the effort.. Remember an MSc is higher than a degree... The doors that it opens are considerable....

Further then to my original question. Is it worth considering to do a 'beat up' course before starting an MSc. If so, which one?
