Any comments appreciated on this please...

first what do people think of the British Bodyguard Association? (bba) Are they useful? Is there a need to join? What would be the point? Benefits?

And secondly and probably more importantly..in their recent BBA membership application form the BBA state: (quote):

..although licences (sia) are now compulsory within certain sectors of Close Protection in the UK, we (the BBA) appreciate there are many , many , British Bodyguards operating legally both inside and outside the UK without an SIA License.

So what certain sectors of CP and how do these certain sectors of CP operate legally in the U.K without an SIA License?

I've seen what they advertise.

There are quite a few associations for CP & the security industry as a whole.

The question is what do they offer for their members, so many offer pretty much the same thing.

Is there anyone who can clarify or make an suggestions as to which association in their opinion is better?

Iam a member of the bba and its still in process of growing ..
However on their website their is now 325 jobs posted from CP in UK, High risk jobs in the Middle East to residental security in Norway.
There are many associations in the industry, and I ges its what you feel strong for and you can also get support from members, you are given a membershipcard a proof that you are a member in a special group of men and women.

Robin, is also given out the bouncers & Bodyguard magazine..
He is also a hard working guy with actual experience in this field..
This forum is one of the best I ever joined, I will not hesitate at all that with the contacts you will recieve here over the future will help youre career, however joining BBA is just another Turbo on the engine...

Hmmmmm may I play Devil's Advocate....

I've come across a number of associations in my time. Most are not recognized by any Government body, so serve only as a members club for access to certain industry information / contacts... ( some of which can be extremely useful to newcomers).

At some time or another they are linked to 'preferred' companies as a form of recognition... but actually offer no 'real' recognition atall...

Hey... I know - I'll set up the International Bodyguard Association (IBA) - our mission will be to expose the sia for all it's failures.... and replace them. I'll stick an EU flag on our membership card.... when you flash it to a French police officer, you can tell him you're 'internationally recognized' and certified to work in his 'wonderful country'.... maybe he's too dumb to know any different?

"If my website quotes all the memberships I've enrolled for - maybe people will think I'm highly trained and have gained Worldwide recognition?"

Hmmmm I'm a member of the IBA / SBA / FBA / GBA / WBA / WWF / UFC / MUFC / WI / sia / BIA / FAA / BNP / CIA / FBI / HTTP / WIFI /AWOL / YMCA / RSVP / GTI / NSA / ASS / DIK / NOB / and on and on.....

Impressive isn't it?

Why not send me £25 for each membership - you can quote them on your CV's & websites.... you can hope to gain more work with your impressive accreditation - and I can retire early...

No offense intended my friends. We need a little humour from time to time to help us see the reality of situations.

Hawk
Er, I'm not really sure what good a 'membership card' would do...

You don't need an sia license if you work in house - that is you are employed by the company you are providing security for. ie. If a record company employs you directly to look after their artists then you don't need a license. If the same record employs you through a security company to do exactly the same job then you do need a license.
The only exception to this is door supervisors, who need a license whether or not they are in-house, also anyone that employs DS also needs a non-front line license to employ them.

So, Shadow.. are you with the sia only or you would you frankly recommend another association? If so what is the association that allows/recognizes you to work anywhere in the world or at least E.U.?

Question? Are the FBI or CIA allowed to go to let's say... England and start bossing people around and flashing their badges? I know it may be an off topic question, but it isn't... I am just trying to understand levels of concept.

Brazilian... The sia isn't an 'association'.. Its a Govt licencing body.. As such, we have no choice but to join it.. Organisations such as bba have no legal recognisation anywhere and as such, membership to it matters not a jot...

As to you question, would the FBI/CIA come to England and start flashing their badges round? Well there are several of them based at the Embassy... And yes they do throw their weight about!

Sorry brother.. I didn't mean to say that the sia was an association.
