Is there anybody out there who has a good CV, which has helped them get work out in Iraq/Afghanistan and would be willing to look at mine and advise please? If you could personal message me I'd appreciate it guys.

Also what are peoples opinions on CV and recruitment? It seems that employers are looking for certain things and in my opinion it doesn't matter what CP course you've done, if you don't have 22yrs army experience or are x paras/marines then you get put in the bin, or am I wrong? Having done a course with some good guys, some which were x paras and marines I found them no more capable when it came to cp work at all. So I can understand (all though I don't agree with it and know you'd get found out) people sexing up there CVs! Thoughts please?

I don't claim to be an expert in the matter of CV's but I have a few o file and can look at yours if you want? PM me and I send you my email address. I'm travelling home at the moment so it'll be a few days before you get an answer from me but I will look at it.

As I see it there are potentially 2 problems with people "sexing up" their CV.
1) It could cost them the job and any future career in CP if found out. Even if they can do what thier sexed up CV says, and they are the best CPO in the history of CP, they have still shown a lack of integrity in lying to get in that position. It would take a very, very good company to write that off, and potentially with the problems of clearances, vetting etc this could cost that company contracts.
2) Now say for instance an elaborate backstory to for a "sexed up" CV has been constructed- complete with references, different addresses, jobs, certificates etc. This gets the person a job in a high risk zone, but they are not capable of doing the job because they don't have the skills. If this isn't found out until they get in a contact potentially they and other people could die.
My advice for anyone considering "sexing up" their CV is don't, not only are you lying to others, but you are also lying to yourself.

Ooopps Dave something I forgot to put in my post- Dave don't limit yourself to thinking of Iraq/Afghan only. The money is not brilliant these days and there is a hell of a lot more out there that pays nearly the same, but with a lot less risk attached. I've done the whole Iraq/ Afghan thing and it's not that much fun- and looks like it will get worse (not insurgents, but the governments). I would suggest looking at other areas- European work tends to be good paying and is a lot safer.

Hi All,

A quick word of advice. Yes, use other peoples CV's as a guide to design your own but design it yourself as it says a lot about you as an individual.

The last three CV's we received from blokes, were more or less carbon copies of each other - literally. The only things different were the guys name and contact details and it was evident that they had all carried out the same CP course and had undergone some sort of CV building exercise. Not one CV stood out of the crowd or had any individuality that told me about the person.

The other thing that you want to watch is the originator of the CV / document. If you are using MS Word, bring up your CV, Click on File, Click on Properties, click the tab marked 'summary'. Your own personal details should be in here or leave it blank.

I look at this with every CV that gets sent by email and it is surprising what turns up! The 3 CV's I mentioned above, all had the same originator (one guy has typed it and the others used it as a template).

We had a woman recently who kept calling the office asking about our courses and training, we answered her questions and sent her a brochure etc and a few days later we received an emailed CV from a bloke asking for work as a Surveillance operator. I clicked on the document 'properties' and it came up with her details............ good try..

Anyway, Pete's tip of the day: Print your CV on velum or light blue paper so it stands out amongst the hundreds of white boring ones!

Peter
