I've noticed the recent events in the UK and France covering the passage of the Olympic torch. Speaking from previous experience; "you're damned if you do and damned if you dont", so I dont want get into a discussion about the methodology and working practices of the Chinese 'Squad'.
What I find questionable is the legal status of the unit protecting the Torch and the 'Runner'. I can understand the need for 'in-house' protection for a visiting foreign diplomat. How can the GLC legally employ, supposedly, Chinese SF to guard a British TV presenter, on British soil, carrying an over-sized 'Bryant and May'. I am aware that this matter will be swept under the carpet by whitehall, in the interests of foreign relations, but is there any legal precedent for this kind of operation in the UK? It seems to me to be a bit of a legal farce. |
