OK I sent off for my sia license in Jan and it is at the "Minded Refusal" stage as i have common assualt on my Record which is from dec 2006.
Has anybody been in this position before, if i'm allowed to apply mitigation what is the best angle to go at. Cheers Guys |

Definately appeal it. Know of a few doormen who were initially refused badges on the first go round, and were awarded them on appeal. As to best approach i can't really say tbh.. how long ago were the convictions, what were you sentenced with..?

Ummm, not great that it's only 16 months ago really as it's within the two years they specify - i think the key consideration will be what damage you caused.. was it really an ABH dropped to common assault, or is it a real common assault? If it is a true common assault, then i would expect the appeal to succeed, as i have been told that this would not neccesarily stop someones application to be a police officer!
I take it the licence is for CP work? If so i imagine you would have a better case than if it was for doorwork, as the roles are so different. I don't know much about the appeals process tbh, the guys i know appealed 3 ish years ago, and just did so by letter, now i think it's done at court - this may give you a better or worse chance, depending on the circumstances of your case. I'd personally reccomend hunting down a solicitor who's had some experience with this and asking his opinion - and definately not relying on what the sia tell you! |

Hi Scott,
They should have stated with your letter the appeals procedure, if you wish to persue this course of action ! Of the top of my head I think it's 21 days to appeal, with the Post as it is and the sia as it is get it in now, and send it Special D. U posted this on Working the doors as well ? Good Luck Basha72 |

I had exactly the same..a common assault caution for two years which expired March this year and I was informed I would not under any circumstances be granted my sia Licence until at least two years after the date of conviction..this despite the actual assault taking place almost a year before I accepted the caution.
You have nothing to lose by appealing but if you do get anyone you know to write letters of support, esp people with local good standing, know any police officers? , magistrates? etc etc..if not you'll have to wait until Dec 2008 , if that was the date of the caution and NOT the assault. Hello Mate,
Sorry to hear about your license. All i can say is that a friend of mine was in the same position with regards to his Door Sup's license. He had to appeal the decision, and gt statements from people who had known him for over five years basically stating that this was a one off and it was completley out of character for him. I do know that if you go to National Association of Security Professionals - Home - A recognised Association within the Security Industry , for a small fee they will help you with licensing appeals. GOOD LUCK! Andy. |
