Hi Lee,

I've not made the move myself yet but the majority of guys I know basically did it like this:

1. Find a job within the industry
2. Stick their notice in with 9-5er
3. Close their eyes and take the leap of faith.

As you are probably aware, it's not the best industry for job security. I'd imagine it pays not to burn bridges with employers.

Sorry I can't help more.
Paul

I'm in the position of a 9-5 with and CP trainined.

I tried to take the step once and get screwed over a treat. No I'm back on my feet this is what I'm doing.

1 Take any job that's offered and my 9 - 5 job will allow (weekends, evenings) I've even taken a few days off to do a couple of days. This I mean, RST, DS, Sports gigs, festivals and get networking that way.

2 Make sure that you are in a position to get a 9 - 5 job if things get dry. I'm working on a few quals to do this and as work are paying for it, it's a bonus.

3 Make sure, if you get an offer, the t's are crossed, i's dotted and the signatures are there and you have a start date. In other words as safe as you can make it.

4 Like the guys have already said, under no circumstances, burn your bridges.

It's taken almost a year and a half to get myself right again..........it was a nightmare!

Best of luck to you mate.

Hi Ruby long story they didn't send me the application form for six months, the sia said it was a problem with my post.. i had to have trace put my mail.. turns out they weren't even sending it to me.. then they kept hold of my documents for quite awhile.. then they sent them back to the wrong address.. etc. Basically in the end i got my MP involved.. i threatened them with the human rights act, because they were restricting my right to free movement with keeping hold of my passport.. that got their attention.. received my docs back the next day.. well the day after because of above. I just kept on at them rang the 020 number spoke to the same person each time, and to be fair he was v.helpful and spoke politely to them and kept my cool. good look with it and feel free to mail me again if i can be of help?

Thanks for your replies .. after i pasted the course i got my first job within the first couple of weeks.. and after that was being offered work every week for the first couple of months, the phone calls soon dried up though as there is only so many times you can say i haven't received my licence yet.. so a year down the line i guess i'm starting over again..

Lee, i was in the same position mate, done my course in 06 and took 9 months to get license. had loads of offers but like you said, you can only say no so many times before the calls stop. personally i chose (because i'm also in the T.A) to get attached to the regs for a year, when i finished that in feb i got a lucky break with a company. only 3 weeks work but while on that job i networked and exchanged numbers with everyone i could, eventually i started to get the odd fast ball for one night, for here or there, and it's starting to have a snow ball effect. now i'm getting a call a week about some form of work.

I'll be honest, I've had a few moments where i thought stuff this, off to get a 9-5 job, but i kept at it, and now things seem to be picking up.

My only advice is take what you can, when you can, regardless of job, if anything it will give you a good rep with that employer for future jobs, also keep at it. it's been said so many times on here, and i myself have taken the advice, but perseverance is the key!!

G8 advise Walks99!

I'm in the same position too with a decent paid 9-5, but with no prospects & no job satisfaction. Therefore I'm hoping to get on the CP ladder myself one day (it won't be though the lack of trying either!)

In the mean time may I suggest, like me, that you keep yourself busy trying to build up your CV with the relevant training & stuff.

-ALL THE BEST-
