Hi everyone, this is my first post on here. I am currently a civ pol copper, been very lucky in the last seven years done various roles response, proactive crime, CT and some surveillance. Also done some good courses too, but with the job being so political I had thought about a career break and joining Rmp to get that extra experience.

Any thoughts please? Cheers

There are two sides to this argument Andy:

No mate, are you crazy? stay with the Civ Police.

For you to join the army and go into the Rmp would be a backwards career move. Stay where you are Andy. Don't get me wrong there are good 'specialist' jobs within the RMP and also within the Army but with your background you would be wasted. That is unless you want to deal with 'Theft of a pedal cycle' or RTA 88. You would be head and shoulders above the rest of the young lads. Bordom would soon set in and i think you might regret it.

Yes do it! Join the Army and see the world!

On the other side of the coin if you want to join you can specialise not only in the Rmp but also the Army as a whole. Maybe SF/C.H.I.S/Surveillance and maybe RMP CP.

If it floats your boat then i can guarantee that should you join up you'll be deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan. These tours really are life changing experiences and if this is the type of challenge/experiences you want then maybe joining up is the way ahead. I cant imagine anything in civ street which compares to the feeling of being mortared day and night, the life long friends you'll make during this life and the experiences and feelings your body would never ever witness whilst working in the UK.

All this of course comes with a price. 6 months away from home, friends and family, hardship and of course extreme danger! High and lows, bordom and sheer fatigue, adrenaline dumps and surges.

But boy the f****** buzz you get is 2nd to none LOL

British Army and RMP recruiter.

Andy stay put where u are you lunatic. I'm ex Met and I would quite happily be back where I was before.
If you are looking for CP role then if you aren't allready transfer to the Met and start building up your experience/career towards doing the Viper course. Worked with Special Branch in Afghan when they were there with their clients, these guys go all over the world first class and are on good dough. Leaving the job to join the mob would be a step back in my opionion...

Have you thought about joining TA RMP? - using that as an insight, plus then you can get yourself mobilised, take a short career break from civpol while you do it, and see a bit of the front line - if you really really like it and can't see yourself back on the street, then you can always try and push for TA to REG transfer... i know they don't like doing this, but with the right experience and a tour behind you, you could have a good case...

Got to consider too; you are looking at leaving a job paying about 28k? a year, to go work with some very young lads, and earn significantly less than this.. i think you need to seriously think about and research this before you commit. (i know you are talking of taking a career break and doing it, but you need to look at the pension side of things. plus what age you will be when you hit your 22, if you intend on that length of time.)

All that said, if you really want to do it, and feel you'd be missing more by not doing it, than the sacrifice it's gonna take.. then i say go for it..!

It depends which 'force/service' you are in. They all have different rules.

PS 'SB' don't travel first class btw......

No, the other North! is on a distinguished road
Andy, I bitterly regret not taking up war zone journalism at mid-service Plod time, thus encouraged by one already in place. Now, it's too late. By all accounts, to make the grade as a journo I would have had to be in 'Chapel', on apprentice wages until I started delivering high-quality copy, which was a two-thirds cut in salary with a wife and kids to support. In retrospect, I could have done it and become a 'name' on the circuit.

Nowadays, you can take eleven months three weeks as career break.

If you're raising the Rmp question, then do it if at all possible.

Or live a life of regret, with an artificial cap on your income.

Don't let me influence you though .............
