Andy, I have to agree with what has been said by
CPT291 concerning medical cover.
If and I State if we are talking about the UK then I would rather employ a fully trained paramedic on the team who has all the drugs and equipment that would be needed to keep someone alive until help arrives.
There is also a trained emergency doctor on the
Circuit who also has his CP license so he would be a better choice for some teams.
How often are you keeping up with your training putting in drips , CPR , de-fib, airway management.
As to where else can you do this type of training, well the answer is the UK. When I was diving for a living I did a 2 week course at The Wolfson Institute of Occupational Health, Dundee university with a doctor called Philip James. We spent every night between Dundee Royal and Dundee Ninewells. At the Royal we were allowed to suture people with the supervision of a doctor to start with and then just with a nurse once we were confident enough.
We put drips into each other in the classroom, helped out in resus at Ninewells and also attended operations , autopsies where we carried out Chest drainage, Traci anyway put tubes in through the throat and also learning veinal cut downs, this gave us the grand title of Diving EMT to be used inside chambers and it was put on us when abroad to be the ships medic.
My training was used when my late wife had cancer and she needed drugs at the end, I was able to put drips in and give her the drugs that were required. This was all approved by the doctors and nurses that had been treating her.
I know people that used the skills on a number of occasions to save peoples lives but we had to go back for a refresher every 3 years.
These courses are still going on, one is carried out in Plymouth by Interdive Services.
When discussing this matter before and there have been quite a few discussions on this matter any little of what you have learnt could save the life of a college or client, it is just having the bottle to get stuck in and try.
HE is a totally different thing and I am not getting involved in that argument as I am not employed over there and have no intention of going there.
