Hi all,
I have few questions regarding the CP industry. WOuld be very happy if you could help me out. First of all, its my sight. Do I stand any chance if I have vision troubles? It is not a big deal, neither it is extreme (-3 i think). Im into martial arts for quite a long time already, doesnt bother me. Second, would serving in Special Forces in my country (Cyprus) help me anyhow with my future job? We have a conscription down there, so everybodyis obligated to serve, I managed to "escape". So, 2 years. Would that be considerable? Third, is it true that most of the recruiters try to avoid dealing with former russian military personnelespecially the ones that have fought in Chechnya during the first and second chechen campaigns? And finally, fourth: when it comes to management, do they have to be former CP officers? Or several degrees in the related field will do the job? I have a BA in Law and planning to study Security Management. Do I stand a chance, when it comes to the management? Thanx in advance, Ellion 86R* |

Hi Mate,
In answer to all your questions, it comes down to the individual in all regards, I have known ex russians working in the pit for erinys who were every bit as accepted as others. I know of cops from Germany working in HE, civilians from the UK with relevant history in the industry and who have bothered to do a course or two (had a bit of luck in recruitment) and have went on to excel in the field. equally I have known some ex forces who do not adapt to the Psd world... horses for courses!! As regards management , it is usually more a question of experience rather than degrees etc, I know several middle managers and one or two country managers that have little to no formal education but a good sound military experience (not necessarily officer rank). As for the eyesight , if you wear glasses/ contacts and dont spoof about it , that should not pose a problem. My concern would be age, background, experience, courses completed, employment history in the industry, attitude and keeness. Hope that helps |

I'm 21. The thing is that I do not really want to waste 2 years of my life in retarded cypriot army. Especially if it will not help me in no way. If it was at least one year - no problem. But to, hell no.
By reading the forum I understood that it is extremely difficult to get in the industry for the newcomers. Especially without military backround. And in that case 2 years of some kind of cypriot SF will not play that big role, I assume. For example, this degree: Foundation Degree in Security & Risk Management: Department of Criminology would it me more competitive at the job market when it comes to CP industry? Even if just applying for A CP officer? |

Ellion, to be honest no, another degree at this stage wouldn't really help. Two things to consider;
1) A degree in security management does not cover any of the extensive skillset a CPO needs. 2) Even if you get the degree, what "real" experience do you have? You have said you're 21 with a degree in law, so I presume you spent 3 years at University. Now I don't know you but I have to ask the question what have yon done, aside from education? I admire you for having done a law degree, but to stand a good chance of getting a job as a CPO you need to do courses and unfortunately get a bit more age. I would personally look, if I were, you at either going and being a lawyer, you'll earn a lot more than a CPO if you're good, or if you can, join the Cyprus army in their Special Forces, but serve more than the 2 years, look at at least 8 years and do all the courses and overseas postings you can to get the experience. |

At 21 mate, do your military , get some life experience and then consider options.

Ok, Ellion, you seem to be pissed off with the advice given, fine. But just think about the following.
1) Ellion face it you're 21, with your attitude- I was the same at your age, you'll grow up in time- you won't get a job as a CPO. If you were working with experienced guys on a team and you start with the attitude you'll be out of a job and get a very bad reputation for yourself. 2) Marvellous you do and train martial arts. Ok so you have some combat skills already, you are still 21, unless there is some martial arts skill that makes you older magically? 3) In terms of life experience though at 21, after doing a degree you haven't really done anything. What jobs have you done, what sort of people have you worked with, have you worked as part of a team? 4) If you are going military don't see it as a lost 2 years, it can be a wonderful life and if you go into it to learn you will. But if the Cyprus military is like any other military on the planet- for gods sake lose the attitude because you will be doing press ups for ever otherwise. |
