A quick question: Has anyone attended or had any experience of the S.P.E.A.R self defence system. I have an opportunity to attend an instructors course and would really like to know if it is worth while.

Thanks Guys and Gals.

Worked with a bloke a few years back that had done a SPEAR course out in Canada. He said it was easier to teach than most systems. If you do decided to take the instructors course how do you intent to teach, regular weekly courses or courses over a weekend? I would be interested in attending.

Hi Mitchell,

The Spear system was taught to RUC personnel a few years back and was very effective and unlike many other techniques , it was effective to officers despite height , strength and weight.
The video posted above is good but it does not show the initial contact on the suspect very well, the lead hand in general can be used like a breakial stun in addition to a defensive hand placement and as such already 'puts in' a weakener in order to assist compliance and assist in controlling the suspect.
Great technique and highly recommended by those who have used it.

I have had some experience of the system and trained with one of the instructors.
Parts have been recommended by ACPO to be included in the Police DT training package.
Tony Blauer is coming to the UK in two months, so try and get on that weekend course to give yourself an insight.
I concur with what has been said by mickworldwide.

It will teach you a conflict strategy with all the terminology and acronyms that organisations tend to like as well as the psychology in understanding fight /flight. It won’t teach you the actual techniques you will need in conflict such as control/restraint, disarming and effective striking etc. It’s a system that has appeal to martial artists etc who feel they can’t bridge the gap from training to real life scenarios.
One of my friends is a SPEAR instructor, personally, it’s not for me as it’s not a complete system, but I see its appeal to those who like terminology.
For the record I am a martial arts instructor who believes in the ability to bridge the gap between training and real life conflict with the system that I teach (Genbukan / KJJR International Headquarters)

hippy will become famous soon enough
Speaking as a SPEAR instructor it isn't intended as a standalone system. It is designed to act as a bridge to your particular style.. Being built on a natural reaction it allows anyone to learn it quickly and easily allowing people to move through the initial adrenaline dump effectivly

Isn't there a S.P.E.A.R. system seminar soon in Scotland?
http://tonyblauer.com/FilesUpload/UK%20Camp%20Brochure%20V3a.pdf
I'd consider coming to see it, as prices seem to be sensible, however traver and accomodation will probably cost more than seminar itself
