Great points all.
Do not fall into the misunderstanding that "big = brawn". It's not always the case - it's an individual thing, just like midgets like myself :-) m |

yes definetly. Have found that execs prefer people that can blend in. Also todays people try to stay away from the bouncer type stereotype. Bring about bad PR exercises.

I'm 6'5" and 130kg bloke and worked with national leaders before. Difference with size is potential threats identify you easily and will take you out first if they are good. Smaller guys are more agile and less of a target. BUT yes we are better bullet catchers and the primary does feel safer with bulk around them.

I don't generally agree with the philosophy of 'bullet catching'. Rounds these days will generally cut through 4 or 5 people like a knife through butter. BG size can obscure target identification for clear shots at distance but indicriminate automatic spray at a closer range - it really bears no relation if you were standing in front of the Principal or not. It is true, and one that you have highlighted, that different countries will sometimes take a different stance on the subject, however, for the most part, it is true to say that a large size frame in either the corporate or political world appears to be too aggressive and not 'in tune' with the perception that the Principal wishes to portray. In this environment, the Principal feels safe regardless because he knows he is being provided the best possible protection that can be.

I have been in the business for nearly 21 years and know size has never mattered but also depends on the job you are looking at, If its CP to the Corporate world then know and many other areas around the corporate or Witness as they want you to blend in. Now if you are looking at he Entertainments that is a factor in some areas especially american artist, and there security are all X footballers only the advance guys look normal and are at a normal size and know what they are doing they are usually employed locally. Hope that help good look by the way

Recently i graduated from the Advanced Executive Protection Hostile Environments course with Trojan Securities in Arkansas. I can tell you in all honesty i am 6'3 and when i attended the course i was over 19 stones. i can tell you that with what is required today as a part of a CP team being LARGE is not an advantage. Quite the opposite i believe is true that it can be a hinderance.
Fortunately for me as a bodybuilder, weightlifter and fitness buff i can say that i did well in the course but as a result of the training i left the course a stone lighter and i must admit that i feel GREAT. Since returning to the UK i have continued with my running and changed my program to more of a cardio style training rather than size and shape oriented training. Todays CPO for Iraq, Afghanistan etc. must be able to be agile, fit and strong where required. I leave you with these words. "It's not the size of the dog in the fight" "It is the size of the fight in the dog that wins" I have been fortunate enough to see celebrities from the US with LARGE Bodyguards or Minders which is much differnt than being a CPO. Good luck |

I'm 6'6 and very broad, which can hinder the work I get. It tends to be only when a client wants someone big and scary looking alongside them. It's very difficult to get covert work when you're head and shoulders above everyone else around you- especially the client I've been working for recently, they are only around 5'5 which makes me look even bigger. They like this, whereas some people don't. If you're with someone who isn't well known and wants it to stay that way, they don't want a giant with them drawing attention. So I guess you could say in some ways I've found my size a hinderance, but I wouldn't want to change it. When I was working the doors and festivals I very very rarely had to get physical to stop troublemakers, my bulk and instantly changeable demeanor were all that were required.
