Thanks for your reply.....Completed a CP course (Phoenix) in 2003 and have done reasonably well in getting work but was looking at any possibilities for improving skills areas without spending a fortune!!...unsure what exactly is needed for maritime security.....just fancy something different!

Just a short intro, I've been involved in Marsec over in SE Asia, predominantly Indonesia for some years now.

Even more so than the circuit, it can be very difficult to break into. SSO course would be a step in the right direction, it would give you a basic understanding of the ISPS code. For any UK based people, many companies offer the training, but check on the accreditation as it can vary. The Department of Transport (TRANSEC) is one of the more noted and recognised, as is Lloyd's Register.

A good company in the UK offering maritime training is Independent Maritime Security Associates.
Run by no nonsense fellas, they will advise you on the type of training you require, and not in the market of selling you underwater knife fight courses if it isn't required. I make no apologies in plugging them, they have been in the industry years, and have a great understanding of whats happening out there at the moment.

With regards to working offshore; most of the Oil companies will not employ you direct. They simply contract people through the larger security companies. Even though getting out a helicopter may be a great and indeed useful skill to have, and I'm not disputing that
in reality it is not a basic requirement before you can apply for work. I would advise you to save your money for a while. I can speak from experience there, as last year I worked offshore in Nigeria, when I was recruited it was based on my Marsec background, and sea survival and helicopter escapes were not mentioned.

Hope that helps,

Steve.

To the best of my knowledge Ray, they are no longer providing training and not as involved as they used to be in Marsec.

Hi Shakes,

The drilling company was run out of Aberdeen, and the rig operating in Nigerian Waters.

Tactmed,

Sardonyx International are good guys, ran by a friend of mine also. Maybe it would be good for you KS Int to drop Andre a line with regards to training as he is just over the pond from you.Not too sure that it would be a career change as there is limited work out there, and usually knabbed up by specialised companies. However adding another string to your bow would do no harm, it would only account for 20-30% of my work, but as they say, variety is the spice of life.
