Hello fellow members,
I would like to send best wishes to all, especially those in hostile environments. I would like to say that I am here looking for like minded persons and if any of the experienced guys had any information on how Dog Handling skills plays into the picture for this world and if they recommend anybody to talk with ( UK or Europe) about getting qualified in the explosives detection field relevent to hostile environment jobs. Thanks |

Gidday Mate - Explosive Detector Dog (EDD) Positions in this line of work are even more scarce than CP Positions, I worked a dog contract in Iraq which primarily dealt with searching Vehicles, packages, people and buildings at Entry Control Points (ECPs) and being on call to search external buildings, Bomb threats, IEDs with EOD and QRF Teams. I cant help you regarding training in the civilian sector? in my experience the only recognised trainers are through the Police or Armed Forces.
EDD Teams are often attached to Police Specialist Search Teams when VIPs and visiting Dignatories are visiting Countries, they usually move 2 Hrs ahead of the VIP, clearing buildings and route searches so the area can be locked down before he/she arrives. ArmorGroup and Bluehackle are 2 British Security Companies that have Expat EDD Teams, Hope this helps!! Cheers Dean |

Good day, so were u doing the dog handling? or u worked along side as security? the contract in Iraq. If so, are u doing any dog stuff now? I did some searching on the web and came across some civy dog training kennels that have ex police and MOD dog section guys that offer training for said work. I talked to Collin (seemed like a pleasant bloke) at a place called Home Page they said they can offer training for EDD handler at something around 500 pounds a week or so and that I prob need 3 weeks or less based on my experience...what do u think about this?

Daemonhund - I did my Dog Training through the Police (3 months) and was a handler during this contract in Iraq, I have also done security Work in various other places but not dog related, PSD, QRF Teams and Medic.
My personal feeling regarding the civilian training is to look at what is being offered post course, there are several differant levels regarding Dog training and 3 weeks will teach you what to understand regarding the Dog indicating on explosives but there is alot of knowledge required regarding Dog Behavior and how to correct faults.... ie what are you going to do if the dog you are allocated starts to false indicate on objects where there is no explosive. Keep an open mind and deal with reputable companies. |

Well, I dont have any illusions that after 3 weeks I''ll be Mr. Super EDD handler, as the last 6 years of training have showed me, everyday is a new day and u will learn something new today...but that is one of the aspects that I love about training/handling working dogs...keeps u on ur toes..lol ..but of course that is a good point that u had about the false indications I would like to learn more about it...but i would say that behaviour is behaviour and as long as one understands the natural drives of the dogs through which they learn, we can make the necessary corrections on the dog...but I dont like to sit and Armchair about stuff like that... need to be there, every dog is different, every situation is unique there r so many variables to consider.
I just like to learn new things about working dogs,I would do a course just for the knowledge gained alone...unlike a number of handlers, I have a real passion for the stuff...so I am here to see if I can put that passion to a better cause or somehow help with the bigger picture...and maybe if I could make some extra money from it..lol... |

Thanks ...I took a look at ur web site and was curious about the weapons training courses u offered, where could I get more info... prices, breakdown, recomendations..etc....
also I see a 3 day pistol basic. I have prior military experience but could do with a refresher...is there a way to combine basics with carbine or rifle or have a carbine and pistol basics? refresher and then go to advanced in the same course.....? |

Not sure if they are still there, maybe someone in The Green Zone could update. Ronco RONCO Consulting Corp. - Humanitarian Demining had EOD teams with dogs while I was there in 2005.
