Explosives Dog Handler.....Need some help please!!

Hi all,

I am very new to the forum and apologise if this has been posted in the wrong area.

I am interested in becoming a self employed explosive dog handler. Just wondering if anyone can offer any advice/tips on the best ways of getting into this area of work?

Any advice at all would be great.

Hi Smithster, does it have to be explosive search dogs? Last summer I did some work with dog handlers that specialised in drug searches here in the UK. To be honest they had plenty work, and while I didn’t ask their pay scale they didn’t seem short of a bob or two. If I can help drop me a line. K9medic

Yes k9medic has a strong point,
you can always speciallize on bomb detection, but must have other areas aswell I belive
I do know several guys with past experience as K9 bomb detection dogs, and they all moved into training and even selling dogs..but if you could secure a contract of your own?
to maybe check embassys, or facilitations, ..
Or if youre only interesting in training and selling the dogs talk with security companies, police and military..

Where are you located? Since I have a couple of friends one that is already working with training and detection dogs and one former instructor with interest in setting up a school for detection dogs, handicap trained, and criminal justice ( intern dog program) etc..

You could talk to the companies using dogs such as rescue services, even international rescue services for catastrofes,
And security companies world wide if they would be interest to subcontract your services?

Not sure if this helps but my explo dog handlers were registered with the home office as they had to keep small amounts of various explosives for ongoing training.
