Just doing a bit of research.
Hands up who would be interested in an Indoor Range in the UK?
Obviously not live fire but would be simulation using weapons with lasers in the barrel and CO2 providing recoil.
Any and all input/feedback welcome.

Cheers

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. At the moment it is only at the research stage so not too much info for you. Im thinking of a standard target style range and also areas/rooms which would do interactive scenarios.
More info will follow as and when I have it.

Cheers

Be careful on what system you use mate - I have had a painful experience with this in the past, system cost nearly US 300,000 (not my idea I would like to add) , was absolute pants and never worked.

Massive unreliability issues would make it a risky venture (continual downtime), barrel laser units were inaccurate ranging from no response to way off the mark through to non-triggered shots. Lasers were activated half through the recoil and I was even told that the system was never designed to work with the firearms in use (9mm Semi?). The system you describe sounds suspiciously like my nemesis...

Great on paper, worthless in practice. If you have a system in mind get in contact with the other customers and get to see it working and speak with the owner / operators. By the way, make sure that you choose who you see and not have the salesmen arrange site visits for you (as he will know which problems to avoid).

My personal view is the concept has strength in the training of shoot / no shoot scenarios for experienced weapon handlers (e. FATS systems used by a number of Police groups for this purpose) it should in no way be used as range replacement. Unless people are very strictly controlled by range staff the absence of live ammunition and the "gaming" type environment created makes people less aware of what they are doing with less adherence to basic safety pre-cautions, basically advancing ego not ability, a dangerous mix.

Mind you, the gaming side may be the key - it would give the paintball brigade something to do in the winter..

Good luck anyway

I wonder would there be any interest in members coming to N. Ireland for a range day shooting pistols? I organised one for some NASP members a while back and it was very successful.

You can read a review of it here... http://www.urbancombatives.com/pistolcourse.htm

jcrymer,

I'd be interested in that mate, actually be interested in just a day on the range! I'm in Dublin so it's not a big stretch to drive up!

olcotton,
Regarding indoor range, and without sounding walty, how about airsoft weapons? You can get some decent enough ones with blowback (granted I know not as good as the real thing) and they're quite safe.
They're good for CQB in single rooms etc, disarm/weapon retention drills etc.

Very interested.

I definitely need some range time and weapon handling as I've been out for a few years now. Don't want to wait until I'm on an expensive, short course to realise I've got cobwebs that need clearing.
