Forget martial arts. They are better than no training but they are not fighting systems. Krav Maga is a fighting system and is not bound by rules -unlike martial arts. Why be trained into a limited system when you can be trained into a system that teaches you to think dynamically and apply whatever tools you have to your target?

Dont quite agree Scab, do you not think that somebody with some training is better than somebody with no training ? Although some of the very stylised martials arts are pretty useless in a street confrontations, but some " Martial Arts" boxing, kick boxing and Judo and Krav Maga are very beneficial, as your training generally involves full contact training.

I've found training with someone who has previously done another martial art (normaly Katate, Twi Kon Do and Kung Fu, them just being the most popular I have come accross), they struggle to grasp the concept of going for "illegal" strikes, ie to the face, eyes, throat, groin and using other forms of striking such as headbuts and bites. Once they get out of that they are generally surprised at what is more effective. It is a use whatever you can for whatever situation you're in system which makes it a very handy system to train in.

Also, if anyone is interested in an introduction and wants to see what it's all about have a look at this. It's being run by the club that I train at, I'm not getting anything out of it but seeing as the subject matter dictates it might be of some interest to someone.
BootCamp Weekend A 3 day training weekend which wont make you into Ironman / Steven Segal / Kung Fu master / MMA champ, it will however give you a good introduction to the type of system Krav Maga is. |

I currently train, when I can fit it in and around work. I have been doing so for a number of years. I have used a number of places for training. Where I train now, we get taught a mixture of martial arts not just one, armed and unarmed combat.
We train outside in the summer, whether it rains or not, in winter we have ascess to a decent gym and training area. I enjoy training, its part of my personal development aswell as keeping me fit. I believe that all CP courses should offer some sort of unarmed training, even if it is to get a grasp of the basic skills needed. The link below is to the site of the place who I train with, there are links on that site to other martial arts sites which someone might find useful. (sorry if its a little out of date its being updated soon) Regards Lildev666 Hanimau - Information Last edited by 80085; 25-09-2008 at 01:58 PM. |

Whatever system you use, there is nothing like getting into a fight with someone in a Redman/Hitman or HiGear suit. Thats when you can tell if any of these techniques work (within reason !).
I don`t think there is enough emphasis on ground fighting. Lets be honest, if you are grappling with someone, there is only one place you`ll both end up, and thats on the ground. We teach Tony Blauers SPEAR system. Plenty of gouging, poking, scratching and punching and fend offs. Avoid getting into a grappling match at all costs. |

Pistolero, I also am a fan of SPEAR and inserted it into my agency defensive tactics program about 5 years ago. When training people who probably won't spend much time or money on additional skills, the simpler the better. Closest weapon/closest target. Thats instictive and a reflex that merely needs to be recognized rather than drilled.
I don't necessarily agree that grappling always ends up on the ground, but I get your point that ground fighting skills need to be introduced to any complete training program. Again, complete programs cover many areas of defense/offense and should be based on having the defender respond based on the totality of the circumstances. I can show show you what I might do in a given scenario, but I would be a better instructor if I helped you to understand what you could do. Jerry |
