Definitely. Don't know anyone in law-enforcement and who's been in this line of work for a while who "switches off" anymore. You take your gun everywhere and you're always on the look-out. We've had assholes (can I say this here?) waiting for cops getting off work, following them home, smashing their cars in, etc. It pays not to "switch off."

Guess its just the work !!!??? Anybody else experience this ?
I still get flash backs of Nam. The smell of rotting flesh and napalm is a constant reminder. I think i can hear them coming through the wire, im going.

On numerous occasions i get asked to answer two questions

1. "What style do you fight in?"; usually asked by the 'My style is best' brigade. My answer is always the same........" I don't fight using any particular style, I just fight!". The object of a fight is to win and survive whilst sustaining as little damage as possible.

2. "What is the best technique for defence against an attacker?"........."Running!"

Being a qualified wing chun teacher (18 years) and holding a purple belt in brazilian ju-jitsu I think I can safely state that the best style is the one that wins on the day. There is no such thing as a 'best' style and the term 'Unarmed combat' is something of a misnomer, as the body itself becomes a weapon.

As Jamie O'keefe once said " Dogs don't know Kung Fu"
Bruce Lee once said, "It is like a finger pointing to the moon, dont concentrate on finger, miss all heavenly glory of the moon!"

My Old Gran used to say, "You cant beat back door fun with an Elephants leg" Not sure what she meant by it?

I have to agree with you alot of dojo based martial arts are very ill equipped to prepare someone for real life situations. I have studied japanese martial arts for over 12 years now and have just started putting together a course aimed at CP training providers. Alot of what I teach is very bastardised, and has to be really pared down. Things such as wrist locks etc are okay and effective in the right situation, ie controlling the pissed uncle at a wedding! I try and train people to think outside the normal box, restraint doesnt work on people who are pissed off and determined!! I recently did some training with a cp course. We used live weapons and my "punchbag" was not breifed on what to do! The result was effective and the assailant was disarmed, but someone nearly got impailed with the flying knife!! I think in summary everyone could benefit from some form of training, but at the end of the day when the shit hits the fan, its down to the individual to act and think quickly, and continued training does help!

I teach the SPEAR system and Krav Maga (abroad, where we are less bound by H&S nonsense! Traditional Martial arts are good, but take forever to become expert enough for them to be truely effective... One of my closest friends is amoungst the top practitioners of aikido in europe and he is frighteningly effective... But he has been training for over 20 years... Does someone just starting out as a cpo have that long? No!

I was dragged to the garrison gym at the age of 10 (family tradition) handed over to the pti with a "Right Staff, teach the lad to box" "Yessir" came the reply!

So I boxed until I was 15, when we went to Thailand, where I took up Muay Thai.. Practised that for years... A bit of C&R and then unarmed nonsense (and that is the only way to describe it) with the mob and then while attending a course abroad, was introduced to KM... Fantastic...

About three years ago I cam across the SPEAR system and I now use that as a 'bridge' to KM.. A very effective combination...

That said, boxing did get me used to being hit (and hit hard) early on!
