About 2 months ago I was watching the place where I work when a very well known terrorist murderer approached the premises to come in. He is a man I know can actually go away and come back in 10 minutes with a gun, and its commonly thought that he has been responsible for about 6 murders over the course of the troubles although never convicted. Well it goes against all my principles to allow this individual in for a drink. As he walked across the square towards the premises I looked about just to see what weapons were available if a physical confrontation took place, then I spotted them, empty kegs, I said to myself I'm gona crack him with one of these kegs......... but no need to I refused him entrance and he must have been in a relatively good mood because he left saying fair enough, but as said previously you do what you have to do to stay safe and keep your place of work safe. I'm probably gona get torn to shreds now for this post lol !

Someone might slam your response, but you were on top of the situation from the start. We often teach OODA (observe, orient, decide and act) to our students. Good guys and bad guys use this. The further ahead of an adversary you are, the more time you have to act rather than react. We all know which is faster.
You had the previous knowledge of the bad guy (1 point), you positioned yourself and weighed your options (2 points) you decided an initial course of action- not allow him entry and then you acted (3 points). Once he walked away, you re-evaluated and began the OODA process all over again. Excellent! You win on points and get to share the story. Jerry |

Has the forum question been developed or is this debate still a thread?
My tuppence worth:- Following on from Jerrys comment on Boyds OODA theory (Observe Orientate Decide Act) this was developed orginally to train top gun pilots but is still relevant to any form of defensive tactic/martial art empty hand technique call them what ever you will.! But I would add a P? to that theory and call it POODA ! the P standing for Plethora? So whats a Plethora? well thats a whole collection of Ps 1. Plan ...(if I walk into the room and its all kicking off I am going to seal the door) I have already decided on a course of action before I have observed or orientated. 2. Prepare....(the door has a handle, the chair in the hall will jam the handle and mentally I am prepared to "Act" before I have "Decided" 3. Prevent...(fight flight or freeze reactions by) 4. Perform or practice... ( this conditioning of you mind and motorskills to act/react instinctively without cognitive thought processes will stop the flight or freeze reaction) 5.Psychology...(mental mindset... no matter what happens I am going to win) 6. Perfect..... (1 or 2 techniques...master of one is better than jack of all trades! obviously knowledge is power and the more you know the better you are, however a little knowledge is a dangerous thing! as you try to recall that little knowledge you have failed to "prepare" as your now trying to "orientate" you have failed to "prevent" as your now entering the "freezing" mindset as you try to recall a little "practiced" technique and failed to "perform" the technique you are thinking about so it is not instinctive! you are now loosing your "psyological" edge and have to recommence the POODA cycle afresh........ 7. Paths..... (there are many paths that will lead to the same outcome the primary path in my case is Akido secondary paths Judo Jitsu and Police UDT the path you walk most often will be the one you are most familar with and will inevitable choose in a crisis. However it may well be the wrong path!! an example ...Many years ago I taught PR24 baton and was very proficient in its use early one morning at a large scale disturbance I drew my baton to keep a crowd away from colleagues during an arrest... the offender broke free and ran in my direction I grabbed him with my free hand and as he struggled to escape there was nothing I could do with my right hand as I was holding a pr24. A pr24 is ultimately an impact weapon so it was used to impact the offender being struck with the short portion. Witness perception ensured lots of complaints for exessive force followed! Now the path I chose that night I could not alter once I had taken the first step.(Drawing a baton).. In hindsight I could have kept the crowd at bay just with my presence so..... 8. Presence....(look the part ! that air of confidence authourity calmness self assureness) can negate the need for "Decision" or the need for "Action" If you wanted to you could argue the removal of the Plethora from the cycle as the "Decision" in OODA was made in advance and you have subsequently "Acted" in order to prepare practice plan perfect etc etc But I would argue my path planning psychology presence practicing performing perfecting preventing by practicing pre programming precognitive pschological mindsets and actions have preceeded OODA! Hippys thoughts about a new forum could be set up as a user group within this forum and everyone can discuss these issues till the cows come home! (its 0426 i need to go to bed!) So which did come first the chicken or the egg? OODA or POODA? I just created a room based on all the different paths THE STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN so who is going to step inside? regards Doc Last edited by upcheckonetwo; 30-11-2008 at 04:46 AM. |

I'm afraid that if I start saying PPPPPPOODA, someone might think I'm a stuttering Mexican being rude. (I've been on the streets too long) Jerry |
