for the benefit of those without any previous military background. can i ask if there are any cpos' on here without any military background and if so how did they manage to get into the 'circuit' without such history behind them. any advice and tips on this subect would be great as i myself am looking to 'try' and start a career in cpo but have only got about a years military service behind me so i would be counted as non mil.

Surely your still ex mil, but i'd say you may struggle to get to the places you need your bucket and spade for, as i think in general most ask for at least 4 years mil experience and thats just for a start. Technically anyone can train to be a CPO, i was just a housewife before i did my training, although i had logistics experience which has come in handy. I know it may be slightly different for men and women but i can't see why you can't try.

Hi haz701,
Like ram man said choose your course carefully, 1. Sit down and write what you want out of the course and were you want to operate (sand pit or UK/Europe), that would have a bearing in what course to do. 2. How much money you have available to spend on the course and how much time you can afford to have off work, remenber if you are not working you will not get paid. 3. Research all the course's and the providers, so you go with some one with a good reputation. Being ex-mil or not, well i've worked with non military background guys and they were good operators, and vice versa. It's not the background but the individual that will make you a good operator (my personnal view), yes it can aid you depending were you want to work. And last one read some of the older threads and you will find alot of the answers to you questions about courses, companies, etc. Hope that i've not bored you and that you have something to start with. Hope it helps you mate and good luck with the future. |

Haz, Yoda has given you some excellent advice there, and it's a worthy note for anyone looking for a course to sit down and write out exactly what YOU the trainee want, everything!! It's your hard earned money, and it isn't cheap so make sure you do the boring legwork first to save you saying later 'if only i'd asked that question instead'.
You will find that perfect course for you, and you will be glad you took the time to look in the end. There are many excellent training providers on here who i know gladly give their time to offer advice, and not just on their own particular courses. We all have our own opinions of who we would use for training, but with such a huge choice its a daunting task, and again i'd say follow Yoda's advice and take a few hours to look at archived posts on training providers, as its well worth the effort. Best of luck with your search |

as i am still quite young and i dont fancy doing the army thing again, are there any CP badge holder contracts in the uk/eu that doesnt necessary require formal cp/psd duties(due to my age i wouldnt get a sniff of anything for another 3/4 years)but i'd like to do some high-ish profile work, well you know what i mean. venues and that.

There are always jobs at venues and festivals in the summer, or Rst work, not sure if you can do the venues and the like on a DS badge, but if you are thinking long term then i'd suggest doing CP badge as i know that covers you for such as that aswell as CP work. Not many people take a course and walk straight into some great job where the boss lets you flog his ferrari around his land on your downtime, it is for most a damned hard slog, and i think most people here would agree. But you have done a sensible thing and asked the right questions, i can't stress enough how important networking is, and god i know we all bang on about it enough, but a good course and good networking are a good start.... that and the realisation that you seem to have that you won't walk off your course with a licence to wear a nice suit and a pair of oakleys. Course is the obvious place to start but start and network now, make the most of what is available to you here, ask questions, read the archives, use the chat facility, granted you may not always find it sensible, but it begins to start you down the road by just chatting with others. Attend the November event, put yourself out there, learn from some experienced guys and ladies too. None of us bite.... unless you ask or your paying for it ![]() Start to do these things now, its invaluable, and its a cut throat world out there my friend take all the help you are offered. |

"bite" lol. i dont pay for it, but if offered i'm quite partial.lol.
Thanks alot for your advice, i've been on this forum for quite some time now and i realise that without this forum i would have just jumped in to any old CP course without thinking and i would be stuck in limbo with a badge and no job. thanks to the likes of mally and covert monkey and a few others when i first joined the forum they told me i was too young and to wait a few years(much appreciated). i think i will have a look around and see what low prof work is around make a few phone calls and if its worth it maybe do a course, i'm also gonna try and aquire a specific skill set. maybe do a med course with tac-med. they look great and i'm quite good at that sort of stuff anyway. Thanks again for your advice and i hope that i could contact you again if i have any questions regarding anything. cheers Haz |

Ahh CM and Mally and many others are wise old armadilos, thats for sure, and your right to consider things like medics and Surveillance possibly too. Some fantastic medic courses about and theres ISS for surveillance, and others too, but you know that with being around a little. I don't know how old you are and i'm afraid to ask in case your young enough to be my son but you are wise to take advice from the people that you have because they don't bull shit you and they tell it like it is, even if it can be a little crushing. The way i look at it is if in a few years time you are still hanging in there and looking and networking then you really want to do this. So spend your time wisely, take some courses, get yourself out there, learn what you can and listen to those with experience. I'd love to go play in the desert i really would as would quite a few of us ladies on here, but it isn't going to happen, so we concentrate on what we can do, and make that work for us, i suggest you need to sit down and really work out if you are prepared for the long hard road ahead.
My advice may not be great, i'm hardly experienced as most of these guys but i call it how i see it and how ive learned. I'm sure there are many in a better position to help you, but feel free at anytime to come and witter to me and i will try and help you out or point you in the direction of someone who can. And there will be NO biting you little deviant |

Deviant?lol. I have been thinking about the long hard road ahead of me and to be quite honest i am looking forward to the challenge. whether i get the type of employment i want or not, it will be good life experience and money well spent. but for now i am just gonna keep networking get on a few courses and try my luck. even if i dont get any CP work for now thats fine. i'm in a decent job at the mo and i suppose a cp license wouldnt do any harm for my cv, could lead to a better job, be it security or not it would show commitment and determination(i think).
i am looking forward to the function in nov, i still have to confirm my place there but i think it'll be alright. should be a hoot. spk soon cheers Haz |
