Just want to put my two cents in. This list is about the most accurate currently out there, but again its not a complete list, I know half a dozen mates who should be on it. And like stated earlier it doesnt take into account injuries. The way it works is the owner of the site trawls news items and if he finds something new he posts it and recently his site was hacked so I dont think it is updating as often as it should.
Remember guys and girls what you are getting yourselves into. This line of work (HE work that is) has always been in a bit of a grey area and nowdays with little to no accountability on the part of the americans in regards to contractor deaths or injuries things are just swept under the carpet a little. Go in with your eyes open. I know the money is a huge drawcard but ask those families who have lost someone, or the guys who are injured and see if it was all worth it. I can tell you the answer right now... To the fallen on the list, keep the drinks cold lads see you in the big bar in the sky...RIP Listening OUT. |

Like Jackoftrades I too know many others who are not listed on the site. It is unfortunately a far from complete list.
The reality is there for all to see and especially the number on the list that have been killed carrying out convoy escort, which to be honest is most likely where most new starts will end up. I ran the convoy routes for the better part of 3 yrs and was lucky enough to return relatively unscathed, others including team members were not so lucky and that is fact. Convoy is a game of luck, pure and simple, no amount of training, courses, certificates, capbadge or other is going to keep someone alive if they are hit with an Efp or culvert IED. During my time there was no pattern to attacks, MO from the insurgents... it was simply wrong place at the wrong time. I would echo those who have stated that it is a big decision to make. work is work I agree there and the cash from the sand pit is a good draw. I can say that it is not an everyday occurrence nor is it a case that everyone who does convoys gets killed, but it is a high risk and the Convoys do make a relatively easy target. Make sure you know and are happy with your skills and drills, it is in no way a bluffers game and the wrong time to discover that you are out of your depth is during a prolonged contact in Fallujah or Tikrit... To put it simply I actually enjoyed my time on convoys and would consider it again. The list of fallen and the numerous injured do put the whole job in perspective ... ball is in your court folks. |
