Hi all.

Thanks for taking the time to read this. Im 21 and have always had a strong interest in a career such as CP.

bit about me - I was in the army cadets for 5 years, before i get ripped into for it i know its not the army! however i have had extensive experience including arctic warfare + survival training with the norweigan army (in northern norway in february!! COLD!!) , Escape and evasion training etc. All our instructors were ex-services and it was taken very seriously so i have a good basic knowledge of how the army works and how field operations are conducted. I am also v.experienced and skilled with firearms. Some kickboxing history too ( im taking it back up).

Ive been reading up on CP courses and Longmoor look quite good. I realise that with limited experience i wont be in the running for well paid work but i am willing to put in the graft to get there. Eventually i would like to work abroad and im not phased by the idea of being in hostile situations so assignments such as iraq etc would be what im aiming for.

where would the best place to train be? what sort of things (excluding joining the army or police) could i do to increase my chances of being successful in this field? and what sort of work could i expect initially.

Any advice would be appreciated, ill shut up now

Thanks,
J22

Welcome to the forum mate

Sorry but I did smile at the boy scouts bit!!

Mate at 21 you are young and as you say although not impossible it will be hard to get past the cv vetting stage. There are guys out there with a great deal of knowledge and slightly older who are hunting for work too.
I cant understand why you dont want to join the forces?? Its a great way to build a career, learn a trade and build on your experience portfolio. The army, then onto Rmp CP roles would be a great grounding into the private sector. Come out in your late 20's and build your career from there with the knowledge and training.
As for providers, ring them and ask their advice. You know about Longmoor, Ronin are also good, Brummie at Regal is also a good choice. Courses are always good on cv's but not compared to actual experience.
Armed forces every time.

Good luck mate

Honest opinion. Join the Army or Police. Army cadets will not count for anything as far as I am aware. You are 21 years old, put 5 years graft in the army stilll be mid 20's and you will have a better chance of getting a role.

ANy questions PM me, we were all new to CP at some point

As previously posted J22, join the forces mate, why not follow the Rmp path and go for there CP side of things, this will hold you in good stead when you want to make the transition to the private security market. And has been mentioned do 5-8 yrs graft and Exp and you'll be in much better position.

Good Luck

hi J22,

This is often a thread which appears on many forums, I echo some of the sentiments above in that you are a little young for many positions in CP, let alone in HE work.
In general most employers (for a host of reasons) will not consider a CPO under 23 - 25 years old.
My best advice to you if Police or Military service is not an option would be to gain the sia license and comence wth event security, door work and staic guarding , continue to train and build your reputation amongst your peers.
HE work will be difficult to come across without a Mil or Bill background unless you are extremely lucky or have excellent connections.
Sorry if this is a downer for you or sounds offputting, it is not meant to be that way , Cadets service means nothing to HE employers ... and will likely mean nothing to CP employers within the UK.
Our company will not HECPO train anyone under 23 yrs even with Military experience due to the unlikely nature of their employment opportunities.
In short friend you will need to start at the bottom , and work your way through a long road to get into the roles you are showing interest in.

Roadhog will become famous soon enough

I echo the sentiments of the guys who previously posted. Army Cadets- even with adventurous training- means nothing in the world of work, despite what instructors etc say. Your best bet is the Military or old Bill, ideally go Rmp work hard, do the RMP CP course work at that for a few years and then in your late 20s leave and go to the private sector.

Many guys have seen the news about Psd operators getting huge wages in Iraq and want to leap on the bandwagon, thinking all CP jobs are highly paid. While relatively speaking they are, they can also be fairly high drag- depending on the principle you are assigned to protect.

Speaking from a recruiter/ employer side looking at employing someone I would not take anyone who has not been round the block- mid to late 20s, early 30s depending on the principle. Even then you would need to show me good security experience- again this depends on what I'm taking you on for- for a CPO I wouldn't look at you if you don't have at least some Rst experience and minimum of 1 years experience as a CPO/ PSD guy. But for top contracts a years experience as a CPO would just get your foot in the door as an RST member.

If you chose to go the commercial CP role and ignore the opportunites of the Mil or Bill route, then I would suggest the following to you. Get your sia CP if you can afford it, if not get your DS badge to start. Get a job in one of the 5* London Hotels- Marriot Grosvenor House, Hyde Park Hilton, The Sofitel St James- good opportunities for networking with CPOs of visiting VIPs, get a DS job at a London club for your off days and save your money and network like mad.

Good Luck
