Has anyone here applied for a CP post within the UN?
I applied for 2 jobs via the website, one in March this year and one in April. For the last couple of months I see that one application is awaiting a decision and the other has been received. When I try to contact the UN via their email address I get a generic reply stating that the application is being processed. As far as I can work out there is no way you can contact a human to discuss things. Weird. If anyone has had better luck could you tell me how it is done? Many thanks, AJ |

Taylor...the UN is a Bureaucracy mate, ergo, the secret lies in the label. However, I wish you the very best of luck with your application.

Hi Taylor
The biggest problem is that, a computer program read over all applications and look for keywords. There are a hundreds of applications daily world wide which will be sent to the general recruitment section. When you fill out the P11 you must dry to enter really everything what you have done and hoping that you will have the required keywords for the job. For jobs with open deadlines, it can happen that it take up to one year to hear anything. Like in my case, the contacted me nearly 15 month after my application. With closed deadlines you should get answers inside of one month after, because of the starts the so called telephone interview process. But mostly there are internal candidates for the vacancy so that is why most people don't get any reply. I wish you good luck. regards MAD Last edited by cpmad; 24-07-2008 at 06:53 PM. |

I have worked for the UN, both on a long term attachment from my parent unit and as a private contractor. The UN application system is possibly the most long-winded affair you will ever come across and you will NOT make contact with a 'human' until HR contacts you. (even then the term human can only be used in its loosest sense. They are HR after all!)
That said if you are succesful working for the UN can be a very good number. Decent money, with no concerns about actual payment, often very good guys and gals to work with. I enjoyed my time... I was offered a full time position and turned it down.. Something I sometimes wonder was the right choice.. Not regret it is such, but I do wonder.. |

Most of the CPO positions within the UN are filled from within, personnel who are currently seconded to the mission areas and are already filling a similar role.
As stated above it really is a load of work even to fill out the P11 and then a constant battle to get anything back from them, especially when you apply on line and someone else is in a mission area making all the right connections within UN Security etc. |
