The Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure (CPNI) provides integrated security advice (information, personnel and physical) to a range of businesses and organisations. It is an interdepartmental organisation with resources from a number of departments and agencies. Working for CPNI you’ll be using your expertise to help protect key UK assets and critical infrastructure against terrorism and other threats.

Join as a Maritime Protective Security Adviser, and you will be a vital member of a team of transport security specialists. You will work closely with TRANSEC (in DfT) and other government departments on integrated transport security policy. Your primary focus will be maritime transport, but you will also work with colleagues on other transport security sectors. Together with DfT, you will be responsible for delivering protective security training courses for shipping and ports staff at all levels throughout the UK. As a result, whilst the role is based in central London, you will be required to travel across the UK, and occasionally overseas.

Your significant knowledge of the maritime industry, gained in a management role (ideally including high-level sea-going responsibility in the Royal or Merchant Navy), has given you a broad sense of perspective and a good understanding of international maritime issues. Your understanding of the range of risks faced across the maritime industry is matched by your knowledge of appropriate protective security measures that might minimise vulnerabilities. Ideally, you are aware of current UK government working practices - some knowledge of world trading patterns, the importance of shipping, and an understanding of the means and limitations of regulation within the industry are also desirable.

An excellent verbal and written communicator, you are able to explain technical concepts to non-technical people, simply and concisely. You will have experience of understanding and managing sensitive issues and building and maintaining effective relationships at all levels. Persistent and pragmatic, you are adept at understanding competing requirements and thinking laterally to find balanced and proportionate solutions to complex problems.

To be eligible to apply, you must meet our residency criteria. You must be a born or naturalised British Citizen and one of your parents must be a British Citizen or have substantial ties to the UK. Candidates must normally have been resident in the UK for 9 out of the last 10 years. This is particularly important if you were born outside the UK. You will nonetheless be considered if you have, for example, served overseas with HM Forces or in some other official capacity as a representative of Her Majesty's Government, studied abroad, or lived overseas with your parents.

Due to vetting requirements you will need to be 18 years old, or above, to apply. Your application may take around 6 months to process.

Discretion is important to the Service, so please only discuss this application with your partner and/or immediate family.

Completed application forms should be returned to: RV Maritime Jul 08, TMP Worldwide, Response Management, Lower Ground Floor, Chancery House, 53-64 Chancery Lane, London WC2A 1QS.

Good luck
