Good evening all, I am 19 years young, currently studying a degree in outdoor leadership in the north, to eventually become a long haul expedition leader. However, the work is pretty on and off, so I decided to do a CP course. CTR were doing a discounted course, so I did it with them and am only a few weeks away from obtaining my licence.
I dont want to bore you with my life story, but I just have, the question I want to ask, especially to the more experienced guys, would you feel comfortable working with someone my age in a corporate/celebrity protection world? And have I done this course at far too early in life? Any input, positive and negative, is appreciated! Hopefully get to meet a few of you guys at the function in november Bill11_88 |

Good to see you on the forum mate.
While it is very young to be doing a CP course mate it is not impossible. With good networking and building bridges with your course provider, fellow students and in November you may well be ok. I would look at Rst work as a starter or even guarding and doors to build on your knowledge and reputation on the circuit. Keep informed via the forum and come into the chatroom to make yourself known to those already established. The problem with your age will more than likely be a problem to employers as opposed to your team with many employers specifying certain ages nowadays. I personally just did a course with a young guy who will no doubt make a good cp but is looking for rst work to polish his skills and I would have no problem working with him in the future. My final bit of advice (if you can call it that).... you were given 2 ears and only one mouth...... there may be a reason for this dont you think???? Good luck with your training and work in the future and once again welcome to the forum. Silent

Welcome to CPW and I hope you enjoy the positive networking.....
Few points from my side.... (Just my thoughts) 1) Age... Yes you are young but use it for your advantage. Listen and learn from experienced guys .... it goes for every job, as Silent mentioned 2 ears 1 mouth.... show you want to learn and take instructions (or orders to say) as it come and do it the best of your ability.... 2) Companies ... Yes you might get some dificulties getting new contracts at the beginging but get in to other manguard or DS work to build up your knowledge... Join TA or MSC to get more experience and it will reflect later on your job capabilty... (believe me) Finally... I wouldn't mind work with a young chaps because if I know they want to learn and be as good as others in the market ... so if you are corrected by the big boys it be for your benifit .... You be fine fella, pm me any time with any question.... See you on 8th Nov DH Last edited by DarkHorse; 05-10-2008 at 08:36 PM. |

I have worked with cpo's much older than me (yes they do exist before any one starts!), and some much younger (granted not many though), and there is good and bad in any group, female, male, mil, ex mil, civvies, young or old. I know age can go against you especially at such a tender age as yours, and there will be i'd wager more that say not to you than say yes, but you have advantage where you are young and you are keen, if you use that to your advantage, work hard, train hard, listen, ask the questions when you don't know, accept that you aren't about to be a BG or TL anytime in say oooh the next few years, work your way up from the bottom to the top. Then by the time you get to an age that most ppl would say is 'old enough' you will have a wealth of experience, knowledge, and a CV that shows you were more than prepared to work your way up and do the donkey work that some think they are too good for.
I did my course with a 19 y o and he was a nightmare, he thought he was the big i am, and he just didnt fit in with rest of trainees from day one till day 21. Then i have trained guys a little older at 20ish who were fantastic really worked hard and did really well. Just listen learn and be one of those young guys who is willing to put in the naff shifts to ensure that one day your CV is one of those that everyone wants to be passed |
