Hello to you all and happy new year, Iv just joined this site as iv recently left the Army where i served in the Royal Military Police and qualified as a CPO by passing the arduous CP course at longmoor. I also have a GNVQ in security, experience of Iraq and i am a qualified first aider.

Welcome to the forum. Are you looking for work in the UK (sia req) or abroad. Do you have your SIA licence?

Jonno, although technically you dont, some of the clients in Iraq etc have now started to ask if the companies operatives hold the sia licence... And indeed I know of one client who has had possesion of SIA licence put into the contract!

A total nonsense in my opinion, but out of our control!

sorry to be blunt mate but if your going to be put off by the waiting times and cost of an sia licence you are not going to get very far in this profession.
The waiting times now are sod all compared to the start of the CP licencing coming into force and I along with other determined people had to endure all of that to get to where we are now.
Hippy is oh so right, companies working all over are slowly deciding to ask for an SIA licence, so as much as it is a pain if you want to work in security i suggest you put up with the fairly short waiting time and dig deep

Jonno,

totally agree with the above posts. If you want work in this industry - worldwide, you will accelerate your chance with a licence, without out one you won't get far, and it is now becoming a global standard with the UK leading the way (unfortunately with the sia at the helm!!).

Bite the bullet, if you are current with Longmoor (within last three years) you will only have to do a refresher course - £500. If you then work with an Approved Contractor, you can work whilst your licence is being processed on a dispensation notice.

Even a guard or better a DS licence will allow you to do event and Rst work - 4 days and less than £200.

Hey thanks for all your advise guys. The only problem with me securing an sia badge for myself is that i have previous convictions for ABH - it was on the job but the Magistrate took my training and experience into account and threw the book at me, i only got a fine mind but its on my record now an it was within the past 5 years so still counts with the SIA.

Jonno, listen mate you don't listen to these other people they don't know what theyre talking about. An sia is for idiots, also the pay of 45,000 a year is shit, hardly worth it!!
Go to www.blackops(pmc).uk my company is the one for you, Psd ops global, starting salary 175,000 per year reviewed every 6 months.
Good luck buddy.

Johnno, there are a myriad of companies out there, take your pick mate! An sia licence is a must for UK work or HMG contracts, ASIS and ICPTA are regcognised worldwide except in the UK. This is my personal opinion only, if you want to learn from the best in the UK and gain an SIA licence get in touch with Goose Cryer at goosecp, you will not be taught by a consumate professional.
