"morrigan i agree with what you said but im going to add something to that- operational companies go above and beyond in what they train because they know there is a chance that someday that student could be on their team and if they train them properly at least they will have the relevant skills to avoid the proverbial hitting the fan or at least know how to deal with it if it does!!
(sorry if i stepped on your toes mate!!)"

morrigan, I think you miss my point. At no point did I suggest that a training provider should not ensure their students are not safely and properly trained..

The general run of this thread lately is people complaining about guys running round with cv's that are 'dressed up'...

How is a training provider supposed to know that a student he has taught is going to exagerate his training? Short answer is he cant!

Yes a training provider is responsible for ensuring standards of training are maintained, but he is not responsible for claims made after the fact...

As an employer, I simply research the agency the individual claims to have conducted his training with and look into what they have actualy taught...

Not difficult really and so far, touching wood, I have not employed a single Walter....

Blackstone,

You have raised many valid points and all for the right reasons, however, I am trying to get into the industry but feel I am not good enough. I justify saying this because I am not SAS, SBS, M/L, Pathfinder, Para, Marine or Legion. My experience is 4 years Army RA with a tour of Ireland, 7 years RAF with secondment to special duties and 7 years Police service. I parted company with the police in August 2008 and looked at what skills I possess to find another vocation so I may pay bills and keep a roof over my head. I am the correct weight for my height and fitness orientated for the ripe old age of 42 years. I appreciate that someone who has undertaken a course of training but has not served in the Mil or Civ Pol should be looked at very closely and their CV checked meticulously. The candidate should be reminded that it is an offence contrary to the Fraud Act 2006 to obtain employment by pecuniary advantage (lying). Not enough employers know about this legislation or are willing to call the police and make a statement of complaint. So individuals will continue to try it on and get away with it. I am due to undertake a course of training with Task Int next week at Catterick and hope it will lead to employment. If there are any opportunities you know where I am.

Cheers

Mark

Well said mate, but I do not see why you wouldn't get a gig with a reputable company.

Based upon my own experience it's good to have an SF background etc but far from being the complete picture. And, if anything, can actually be prohibitive to a team in some incidences...

I have met some absolute choppers with verifiable military "popstar" status lol! But their ability to work outside of the military infrastructure within the civvie armed contractor world has been laughable (and unecessarily dangerous!) whilst they have also shown a complete inability to "fit in" with the lads.

There's a fine balance between the guy that believes he is literally a weapons platform on legs and also the walters. Somewhere between are the bedrock of the industry.

Highest number of walters I encountered were the high number of so called "medics" that inhabit the sand-pit. I found many of them were about as up-to-date and current as the late Godfrey of Dad's Army fame!

I feel that the traits listed below are the real "deal-makers" when the proverbial hits the fan...

  • Sensible, but not over-cautious approach to tasks
  • Self-disciplined without being a pervert and beasting yer self around the IZ on a bergan run whilst still in yer skids @ 04.00hrs
  • Flexible with a common sense "can do" approach without a 1000 yard stare and death-wish to boot!
  • Ability to avoid saying "when I was in..."
  • Good team player with ability to communicate at all levels - from literally briefing a 3* General, to blowing smoke up the haaji slop jockey's arse and befriending him so you can wangle illicit meat supplies for a BBQ
Seriously though, one of the best G2 guys I ever met had never been near the forces, was ex old bill and pi$$ed on all of the ex-mil int analysts I met in Iraq. Was nothing short of a God-send and undoubtedly saved more than a few lives; quite literally from his desk!

Daz,

Thanks! this is new territory for me and I am keeping an open mind what to expect. Every Psd team member has strengths and weaknesses, this is what working in a team is all about. I am not Jonny Rambo and will use my wits and communication skills before reasonable force if the situation allows. I have had a run of bad luck with job applications which left me no choice other than to use my skills as a foundation to better things, continued development will hopefully be achieved in the industry. I need a break and hope this gamble works out.

Cheers

I have heard of such stories of operators blagging there history in order for work and it makes me furious. I am trying to get a decent foot in the door and am currently working for a security company in Glasgow (miles away from home) with hope of gaining some decent CP contracts and contacts. I recieve a lack of responses when I do apply to companies and am wondering is it because I in some way fall short in the criteria or is it because that so many scumbags out there are lying about there records that companies dont want to take the risk wasting there time on another jackanory. Its hard enough as it is gaining decent contacts as I understand that its the guys reputation of bringing an outsider in. Personaly I have never and would never lie about my history and think its a shame that some others feel they have to in order to seek work. I got out the army at the worst time when the Royal Irish were disbanded and the market become saturated, now I fear I may have totally missed the opportunity wagon.
So in summary to whom in may concern, stop bulls£$%ing in your CV's, you will get found out in the end and are only ruining life for the rest of those that are trying to make a serious go of things!

Its clear that actually we probably all have relevant points. I hold a HGV 1 licence and can get a job based on that, but the government are now making it compulsary training for anyone who is to be employed in that role as of next year they need to have additional trg. Which is still a joke though. I am not having a go at the blokes who are desperate to get work. I will be soon.... If the company are licensed then they will meet the required standards laid done and its then up to the employer to vet their prospective candidate?
