Why a basic Arabic language in an area that speaks Kurdish? I have just been there for the last 6 months and very few actually understand or speak the language. Maybe the client should be aware of this in his request, and ask for those with a basic understanding of Kurd and not Arabic!

Hi HCosteau
Simple basic arabic is requied. i.e left, right, straight, stop, start, bad guy gona kill you etc etc. Also its required by the POC and thats what he is paying us for. I have been there for the last few years and i speak arabic (lmited) and i get by fine the POC has been there for the last 3 years constantly, only coming to the UK for two months a year and he gets by fine. The big differance with this role is that you live amongst the locals and you dont live behind the wire so an understanding of the culture is of paramount importance. Also can i recap with this post, if you have any questions can you ask me on my personal email addy matj@hotmail.co.uk this stops any unwanted persons monitoring this advert. Hope this helps |

Matjones thanks for the post and the effort of listing a client criteria. Personally think its a good idea of listing essential and preff skills. Good luck and thanks again.

Hi Aubuarkan
Thanks for the comments. Its a valid point as i dont want people or the POC wasting each others time. He has commented so far that he has had a lot of guys who dont meet the essential critera already, also he has got a few good lads too. So worth it i think. Regards |

I know you said not to slate the offer regarding pay etc, But come on...just because it is mentioned doesnt mean it can't be questioned...
There are plenty of operators in the pit on twice that amount. Seems you have a tight arse client, it's not surprising he is getting some sh*te operators with that offer... Last edited by shakespeare; 21-11-2008 at 12:19 PM. |

Well I did say not to mention it on the forum as the POC is monitoring it and may not use this again. If you dont want to do it dont apply.

My sentiments exactly Shakespeare. I actually more than qualify for the job and have just returned from the area on a far better rate of pay on a 6 on 3 off rotation. Why shouldn't we gripe about the rate of pay?!
We have said in previous forums that we should all stick to a minimum rate to avoid the money getting worse because 'New operators' will take anything just to get on the ladder. With this being a 6 on 6 off and no retainer whilst at home I would expect at least 650 a day minimum, especially bearing in mind you are being asked to work alone as an expat in a region where it is still effectively Iraq. If the rate of pay was better then I would apply, as I do qualify for this, but am sticking to my guns on this one. I speak Kurdish all be it limited, but more than enough to get by on, have done convoy work, got the med quals, been a TL there, more than 3 years CP Hostile etc etc The money is crap and why should we not mention it to keep the 'client happy' ?! Yes he may use forums to gain operators in the future, well great whoopedoo but lets get realistic about rates of pay here. Yes the dollar is good at the moment but if it gets back to what it was then 400 a day is crap and wouldnt be worth the job This is an open forum and we should be more concerned on what the blokes want money wise if the client wants quality operators |

I totally agree as well. $400 per day is crap even for the region it is in. I have been working in Iraq for over 5 years and spent the last 2 years in Kurdistan. I am also more than qualified to do the job but not for that money. I was recently offered a similar position. Similar job, same area and month on month off. The rate for that was $600pd + Business class flights.
Chances are Steve will get someones in at $400 per day. What he will not get is someone who will see the job through. He will jump ship as soon as he can. Same happened in 03 when guys came over with AG. Did a couple of weeks then walked and doubled their money. CRG have a similar problem now with the shite money they pay the Toms. Anybody that meets the job spec for this particular job will have enough in his draw to be looking for better paid jobs than this. Good luck to anyone that applies and if someone with the creds this post requires gets it then fair play. P.S Matjones. Good on ya for putting the post up though mate. A job is a job I suppose...just not for me...this one anyway! |
