Unfortunatly the type of shoe that has a good sole tends to look frightfull with a decent suit...

I have however an answer....

To go with your quality suits, you need quality foot wear... So buy accordingly, but the to enable grip, take said dress shoe to a cobblers and have flat, leather sole replaced with a sole (still slim) with tread....

The comments are all good, and I think a lot depends on who you are working with and where. I wear a mixture of 5.11 and good outdoor kit, with a decent fleece for the winter and have a couple of pairs of Solomon 'Approach' shoes, both the Goretex lined ones and the non lined ones.
I spend a lot of time in Baghdad but also travel to other parts of the world where 5.11 is never seen or used and therfore you don't stand out and as it's designed for the job, its very practical. In Baghdad especially in the IZ its a 5.11 catalogue collection wherever you look.
I prefer to wear cotton and find 5.11 trousers to be the best especially for wicking away the sweat. Yes they are a bit heavy in the summer, but every bit of kit has its plus and minus's. I tend to wear a T-shirt under a shirt, that way I can wear a larger shirt over the top of any belt kit. I also always carry a bum bag in my gear, just incase you're required to carry in shorts and lightweight shirts somewhere warm.
Finally suit wise I have a couple of single breasted made to measure dark suits. One a charcoal grey, which goes with any shirt and tie and the other a light weight dark blue suit for hotter climes.

Shoes - comfortable, durable and as mentioned, practical with good grip allowing you to run and stop as necessary as well as comfort for long days.

Good wide belt for hanging all the gadgets and such off.

Have a change of clothes in vehicle/control room etc. to cater for unexpected events such as food spills etc., as well as weather changes.

If ina sunny area, sunglasses are a must and not only to look cool :-).

I won;t go into detail about suits etc., as it's been covered well in the above posts, but i will say as a general rule, make sure you know your principals schedule or potential schedule so you don;t find yourself jogging with him/her in a suit or underdressed for an official engagement.

Be comfortable as possible and dress as practically as possible.

Some good points, must be loose fitting, good footwear, comfortable and a wide belt to hang things off ...

How about this then? fits the bill perfectly ....(The Vatican Swiss Guards Dancing Rags)

Good afternoon ET
On a serious note, aren't they actually quite highly trained Swiss troops?
