My personal opinion why they are important is;
Dragging
To physically move an injured principle or a team mate, also ensuring you have the strength to move a principle forcefully if needed in an evac situation.
Grappling
If worst comes to worst and you need to physically defend your principle then you may well come down to grappling an assailant- especially in the UK- and then you need the back strength.

Your opinions are not wrong, actually far from it, but do differ to mine which are:

Be all round stong, not bodybuilder, just athletic and if/when you need to you can drag if need be. It does not need to be dealt with on a separate level.

Grappling, here i disagree, although grappling is important, it's far more important to end any altercation within the first few seconds (as in under 5 seconds) and move on. Raw, effective, brutal violence will end a situation quickly and avoid grappling.

Good dialogue

I think if you grapple with an attacker you are leaving your principal vulnerable or your team short because you are tied up with one attacker. Its possible they are just there as a distraction or that someone else will take advantage of their attack to launch their own. I think you have to down them ASAP (preferably by taking their legs away if you're worried about getting nicked).

Usually when I'm dragging people its because I'm ejecting them. I'm 8.5 stone but me and a similar size colleague dragged out a 20 stone drunk you was pretending to be unconscious. So you don't have to be huge to be able to move people.

Well the question asked is what level of fittness is needed for the CTR course and that is a basic level. After the course he can worry about improving on that after all it will take six months to get the licence so that time could be put to good use.

The course I did had a fair amount of unarmed combat training so it was fairly physical each morning but I still managed mostly to keep up with people half my age (42) who had come out the army. Unarmed combat itself is more about technique especially with Krav Maga or Systema. A quick reaction time being very important which comes with practice. Most sessions started with a basic curcuit and overal sessions lasted 4 hours at most each day starting at 07.00hrs before doing classroom work or practical exercises. You will be on your feet for most of the day so have comfortable shoes as that will make a great deal of difference to your day.

All I do for fittness is surf frequently so upper body strength and lung capacity is probably above average but nothing outstanding. If I had to run a 2Km fast I would still be out of breath for a while if that helps as a guide. The ability to stay focused with little sleep is probaly beneficial too. Fitness can always be improved on after the course, use the course to absorb information and skills, thats the most important thing.

All your points are valid but apply more to being operational as opposed to getting the course under your belt. Not sure about the grappling though, I would much rather use that persons momentum to pin them to the ground as fast as possible than any lengthy engagement as all that does is stops you from doing anything else and could well be a decoy. If you are the BG then getting your principal out of the area of risk to a safe point is the only priority. After all if you are grapping with an attacker, who is looking after the principal? There may be more than one threat.

Good luck withthe course which I know you will enjoy.

Yes, you are right, but you will need grappling skills to back the other less pretty moves.

Why? I hear you cry... If your initial attack fails, due to the combat skills of your target (who is presumably attempting to attack your principal) you are then left grappling with someone who can clearly fight...
What some grappling skills now?

There is no point in learning part of something and excluding the rest.. If you intned to learn some form of unarmed combat, learn it properly...

Most of the courses today when it comes under fitness level they are crap.

You have to have common sense, you are going to do this for a living you have to have a good level of fitness and and being athletic with good strengh helps a lot.

But, your biggest asset and what you should work on is your brain and use it to get out of situation without gathering attention from others around.

Well, that evoked some interesting responses!! All with positive and negative. For me personally if I am on a team I look at who I am working with and if they are more interested in eating doughnuts than their own well being then we may have a problem!! Physical fitness will not only make you feel better during long hours of in activity but helps focus the mind, de stresses the body so you will be less likely to bite the head of one of your colleagues (only joking, doughnuts are much nicer).

At the moment it is not a requirement of training but ALL good trainers should incorporate a certain amount of physical activity into their programme.
