I would firstly like to thank members of this site for a very warm welcome!!

I have been looking at taking training for a CP licence for some time now as it has been a career path I would like to follow wether it be high or low risk.

I have found that there are many training providers which all follow a similar syllabus of training, for most this is an exciting prospect but I am sure that I speak on behalf of many potential CP officers.

Training is readily available through these course providers but some of us stumble at the most important hurdle, the sia.

When I was younger I made a mistake as a junior soldier which ultimately awarded me an assault charge and a criminal record, Which is now causing me problems in obtaining a CP licence thus halting my potential to work within the UK or in some cases for organisations that require an SIA licence.

Does anybody know of any form of appeals procedure or alternative methods to succesfully obtaining an SIA CP licence?

Many thanks

Hi there,

I can give you a direct quote from the sia 'bible',

How to Check your own record.

If you have a criminal record you might want to check that it will not prevent you from getting a licence before committing yourself to training and submitting your application and payment-particularly as the payment is non refundable. You can do this by using the Criminal Record Indicator on our webiste. This will indicate whether you meet our criminality critera in order to obtain a licence. You will be asked to enter information about all cautions, warnings and convictions you may have. Throughout this process you will remain anonymous.

The result is based on the information that you have entered and is an indication only. Not a guaranteed outcome of the actual check that we will conduct with the Criminal Records Bureau.

To check your record on line go to www.thesia.org.uk/licences - if you do not have access to the internet then phone our contact centre and we will do a check for you.

Hope this helps you and good luck.

Yogi.......... welcome to CP World, hope Ken's post has cleared that matter up and also a few comments on your post here, please dont put all training providers into the same bracket, we do not all do things the same way.

I.E, Our facilities allow for 24/7 training, for high risk training this includes possible Indirect attacks at anytime, weapon carriage at all times, PPE gear worn at all times, living with the whole group of other students, 24/7 you eat, sleep, breath and shit our training, 24/7.

Not all training is the same.....
Andy

My apologies in regards to my post.
I am fully aware of the licence checker and I believe that I am currently in a 'sit and wait' position.
I would regard myself as a 'complete junior' and I am still learning about the industry so once again my apologies.
Thankyou for your valid advice and the correction of my opinion.

Yogi....i am in just the same position I picked up an assualt charge 4 years ago and was fined for it, under the rehabilitation of offenders act, I am not "clear" until next year (5 years for a fine). my little problem with the sia checker is that my charge is Scottish and all the crimes/charges listed on the checker are from English law, which differs, so I have sort of guessed at a compatible charge in English law, I have emailed the sia several times regarding this but its obviously not important to them!!

Cheers

Wow, it seems that we are at complete opposites of the british isles!!
I completely sympathise with your predicament With the online checker which I do every week in hope of a thumbs up, I usually get one of two results from the same input; an outright NO and a MAYBE...................
The answers provided do not really give me a definate thumbs up so I can go ahead and uptake training to work within the UK etc; it also brings me to a grey area where as I doubt the accuracy of the online record checker has anyone else found this?
I dont think that the sia completely understand the parameters of the CP proffession, training costs alot of money and if you do not get a liscence you have potentially burnt between £3.5 and £4K for no good reason, I am ready to uptake my training, my physical fitness is very good and I have the funds saved and I am being held back by my circumstances and the complete lack of customer relations and interest from the SIA.
reference the Scottish Law parameters I would suggest you get in touch with a training provider to see if they can shed any light on that issue, I have not spoken to them but I have been told on good authority that Psd are very welcoming and they will help as much as possible.

Hope this helps
best of luck DG

Hello and thanks for the advice already given.

I am in a similar position. As a recruit in 1997 I managed to get myself a criminal record for assault and was sent to the MCTC for a while. I also get a 'Maybe' on the online checker. I'm determined to build a career in Close Protection, but worried for the same reasons you guys are.

Good luck with your applications and please let us know how you get on with it.

Cheers.

Depending on how old your charge is, at least in the U.S. one can file to have his record or crimes exspunged. A friend of mine was in a jam 20 yrs ago, wrong place, wrong time, completely innocent but, cops lied. Though the ATF(alcohol, tobacco, and firearms) let him get a weapons permit for work, both visable and concealed but, crimes with violence, it maybe hard, even misdemeanors with violence are hard.
So you best bet is to call a lawyer and ask them. Some companies won't hire you if you have bad credit within the last 7 yrs for some jobs.

I have heard of people working with felonies, how they got through the cracks, who knows?

P.S. Your laws maybe totally different as I have been reading further posts.
