I am a serving Police Officer (firearms qualified) hopefully applying for police protection duties in the future. I was considering doing a private course in hope of expanding my knowledge, experience and CV for when I do apply. Likewise this would give me skills if I decided to enter the private sector. I would to include firearms training.

Would anyone recommend doing this or are there major difference between Police and Private tactics/terminology, etc. Are there any recommended courses based on UK Police Tactics which would set me in good stead?.

I have researched a number of courses and ones of interest appear to be Longmoor Group, AGP security, PSD-Training and RONIN re. SIA. I have also seen PPA Int which appears good value but not automatically SIA?

In my situation, do people think it would be worth the money or just wait to see what happens with work. I have the other option of paying for a Krav Maga Black Belt programme instead of a CP course?.

Any advice appreciated?

Sean

There are huge differences between a police cp couse and a civil cp course, you are best getting a police national protective reactive course (cp course)

Reasons being you will conduct 4 weeks of training which will include a further 3000 rounds of ammunition to your basic shot qualification. You will have to be an advanced driver, a course which is 4 to 6 weeks long depending on course, and that is after your response driving course which is 3 to 4 weeks long depending on course. Then you have your 1 to 2 week anti hijack course after that. A police course costs per student £25.000 per student for the respective course, a civil course costs £3000/£3500.

If you are in the Met you will join one of the protection branches, if not it is doubtful you will ever be used in the role.

If you ARE intent on leaving the police and still wish to do a civil course, Bucks New University have recognised the Greymans CP Course is the best on the market for the transition to the civil market.

If you wish to go hostile go on a Ronin South Africa Course. Hostile is different from European CP though. My advice is research any courses thoroughly and assess do yo really need to do them!

Thanks CO19. I thought a private course may help me through some aspects of the Police course (e.g. walking drills, interpersonal skills, etc). It's always been my career goal to do so I am looking to ways to improve my chances of getting on an unit (ideally Met Specialist Protection). Do you think the Krav Maga course maybe a better alternative?

No to be honest, your best option is if you are in the counties transfer to the Met, so you can use your skills.

Last time I spoke to some of the guys on DPG at the Met, anyone showing an interest in Diplomatic Protection were snapped up unless they were a complete numpty. So much so that some of the older more experienced guys were concerned at the lack of "time served" as Police officers before joining the DPG ranks. So if you do transfer to the Met you shouldn't have a problem getting in. But do your research before you jump.

Just one for you guys DPG or Diplomatic Protection Group, sounds better than the job it actually is. It is not CP, it is basically stagging on at fixed points or driving around between embassies or VIP locations ticking a box saying you have visited it. They are just basic firearms officers. If you get on the cars CO19 will then give you a further week course in non compliant vehicle stops should you need to do one. This is rare for them as the CO19 ARV's will end up doing them the majority of the time.

I have to agree with the above comments, the civvy CP market is pretty crap, the courses are watered down versions of whatever the directing staff used to do when they were serving Police/Military. The websites may look flashy and promise the world, but all these companies are interested in is taking your money and then forgetting about you. Like CO19 said, if you are not in the MET then transfer (?) if you can or to maybe West Mids if you fancy kicking plenty of doors in (from what I hear). Most of the jobs in the civvy sector are pretty mundane, you are not particularly appreciated and the money is never as good as people make out.
If it's action you seek then getting on convoy escorts with Armour or Aegis will be your best bet, but these jobs, especially in Iraq, are mega mega dangerous and i'm sure most would agree......The novelty of getting shot at wears off very quickly.

Some Trainers are like that, like the Director of Training at Task International, but i still keep in touch with around 35 of my ex students from 2007. I am big on keeping in touch with ex students and i tell them they can call me anytime for advice which they do. There are a couple of high maintenace ones i must admit but i don't mind. I have introduced and promoted that ethos at Greymans.

Hats off to you for keeping in touch with your ex students, I would guess you are the exception and not the rule though.
I had an ex team mate set up his own training company, lots of promises to stand by ex RMP CP lads etc, funnily enough it turned out that he was full of s**t. Charged more than any other company for an SIA refresher (over £800!) and basically span a load of nonsense about up and coming contracts he was due to be getting.

Companies that keep in touch with there students are also, in my eyes, more likely to be used again by the student should they want further training, refreshers etc..

That is a + about this forum and giving companies there own area to use to help answer any questions added and to show there services, training courses, dates and prices etc..
