Jim, I would have been surprised if you hadn't commented on my last post as it could have been taken literally as opposed to being viewed objectively. I do agree with you that there is a great deal of gun ho brits discussing contacts, weapons etc but these guys are operating in Iraq and Afghan and so are not discussing the finesses of CP at the higher end of the corporate world. I wouldn't say I am 'misinformed' about the the US. As I clearly pointed out, my point of view is backed up with a wealth of 'good quality' experience. Experience that has been first hand, up close and personal - on several occasions. In fairness, I did also underline that fact that I'm certain that there must be US teams who operate in a discreet manner and operate with a little decorum and social etiquette, but it was just 'sods law' that I have yet to meet them?

Generally speaking, getting back to the thread, I think there is an operational methodology shortfall across the board on the international scene regarding covert methods of protection being used instead of, or in support of, a full CP team. Surveillance detetcion and judging crowded areas from a covert position definitely has its advantages in the assessing of areas used by or will be used by the Principal. Many teams, including the brits, do sometimes employ such methods, but not enough and certainly not to the extent that they should. Security is dictated by money and party politics but if the justification is there backed up by hard facts and evidence, I'm sure that many government departments around the world would grant the budget for additional manpower and training. I use covert protection as well as the 'more obvious' low profile team and the passage and quality of communciation during advance work and during the venue is undeniably an advantage that cannot be overstated.

I can't speak for any of the protection teams you may have worked with in the US or have seen on diplomatic and Presidential details worldwide. As I have said is that it is a generalization when you refer to an American method or mindset.

The company I contract for as a trainer, does in fact emphasize the very things we are debating here. Pre-planning, covert and overt suveillance as well as following business and cultural etiquette. In fact, in the corporate sector, you will be hard pressed to spot the protectors if they are doing their jobs correctly. That doesn't erase the perception that Hollywood and celebrity bodyguards create. We have tried hard to eliminate the "guerrilla in a suit" image, although some schools can't escape it. Why? Because they know that it sells training programs and because that is what they believe is required.

There is no "American" mindset in this field unless you create one based on your own prejudices. Again, don't judge the industry by your experience with the USSS or Diplomatic Security teams. When SEALs or Spec.Ops guys are deployed it is either for a specific threat or to make a security statement, real or imagined. That style of protection would get most US private sector protectors arrested. Handing a watchman an assault rifle doesn't make him an operator, nor does putting a combat vet into a nice suit create an executive. It's all in the training, mission and threat level.

Your "tourist" comment reveals your prejudice and I would hope that it was either a slip or just a bad day. I've dealt with some arrogant and pushy brits who vacation in Florida. And don't get me started on the French! Just kidding of course.

My personal downfall that I admit is that for me, the generalisation will remain until I witness for myself the contrary. It is refeshing to hear you mention the procedures adopted by yourself as a trainer and I firmly believe that this should be adopted more internationaly.

You are right, I am very prejudiced, but this is also based on experiences I have witnessed by the US immigration authorities when landing at Washington DC and NY JFK, thankfully not experienced directly by myself I hasten to add.

My 'tourist' comment is also based on personal experiences (Do you see a pattern here?). Its not a slip, and it is certainly not a bad day, even if the weather could be better. Do I find myself in the wrong place at the wrong time to witness the actions of American's - maybe. That said, us Brits do let ourselves down and are probably better known for football hoolaganism, pissing in public and starting fights. Please don't take my comments the wrong way. I very much love America. I was merely highlighting an observation that many of my colleagues and associates agree with. Regarding the 'Seal' type guys in Bos, yes, they did indeed make a statement and my point regardless of the possiblity of the US Ambassador instructing them to operate like that, is wrong, wrong, wrong. Bad for the image , bad for the entire protection operation.

I think you should visit the DoD/ State Dept. and offer to instruct them on covert and more discreet methods of operation.

You never know, they may just decide to take you up...

Hughie79,

I'm the guy that recommended "Just 2 Seconds" (www.just2seconds.org). I forgot to mention. If you like novels, check out "Mortal Shield" on Amazon.com. It's a book about protectors written by a longtime protector. Contains many innovative tactics in the story line. Enjoy!
