Rudy,
The basics I am sure are similar, as the nature of Psd tactics are pretty similar from company to company. The courses will undoubtedly be completely different as to instruction methods, content, instructor experience etc..... |

Gents,
I have found difficulties using the course notes of another due to them being just that..notes. Unless somebody has got a background skill in short-hand notes will genrally consists of a few bullet points and keywords. Now if somebody were to offer you the full course precis that is a different matter... My advice would be do the pre-course prep recommended (if at all), a spot of phys to blow out the cobwebs and my own take is also brushing up on your current affairs. Being able to perfrom the basic skills that you will learn is the requirement, being able to apply those skills in a world you understand better that the next man may be the difference between a job and not. Might be stating the obvious but...... Good luck anyway and I hope it gets you where you want to be |

Hi everybody
This is indeed an interesting thread. To read books or not to read books, prior to training, that's the question! I do agree with the fact that coming to a class with an open mind is a must. I trained people for 10 years in the engineering field (Automation and Robotics) and I've been training security personnel for a few years (Security, Close Protection, Close Quarter Combat, etc.). Yet, I don't agree with the fact that you should refrain from reading books written by others. Well, if one is stupid enough to read a book and believe that it is the absolute truth and then come to my class thinking that he knows it all, well, that student will not last long with me for sure. But I always encourage my students to read books, many books. I give then lists of good books to read. The more you read, the more open your mind will be. I even encourage my students to express their opinion about what I teach them, especially the ones with an intensive background. I always question myself, I always try to improve my skills and my techniques and believe me, I learn a lot from my students. And no, there is nothing like one perfect way of teaching any subject. In Close Protection, just like in Close Quarter Combat, one must find its own way. Nobody has the same skills and experience. Every school has its mentality. Some are more focused on reaction (Close Quarter Combat, Shooting Drills, etc.). Others will put more emphasis on awareness and prevention. There are schools that are more suited for ex-military or law enforcements. No school does everything perfectly. Also, and very sadly, there are very bad schools. And only by reading and getting as much information as possible, you can tell if an instructor knows what he is talking about or not. Don't make me wrong though. The point brought out by MTS is very good. Pre-formed ideas can be bad. But then again, one who read a book and come to a CP class with the I-know-it-all attitude should be doing something else. I've had many students of that type, especially in my Close Quarter Combat classes. They were often Black belts in some traditional martial arts. However, after I succeeded in showing them that they had pre-formed ideas and that they had to get rid of them, they all became very good students especially because of what they had done before, either training or reading. One last thing, there are excellent books out there and, very bad ones. Read the reviews written by people who are not biased. And don't be too eager to believe that all reviews are written by the author himself, for it's not always the case. I'm sure some members on this forum will understand what I mean.
