A. Have been a member for a while, but this is first posting. Have read with interest a number of threads regarding Police Protection Officers; have my own opinions having worked with them and trained them. My advice? Be cautious. Am interested in Overseas employment - anywhere, not necessarily in the Middle East or ISC.

HI there,

just out of curiosity why would you say to be cautious about Police protection officers? Have you had bad experiences? Its just that there seems to be such a big hype about them and you are the first to promote a more subdued view.

Take care and welcome to the forum.

Some of those who deploy outside the UK are a touch Walter. They are trained on the G36CV, but have not had the tactical training for hostile environments. Some of them have a huge gap between actual ability and perceived ability. They think they are much better than they actually are, and they have not really been tested. When was the last time a protection officer from the Metropolitan Police fired their gun (apart from shooting the sandpit pit in the armoury after a long day)? I think it was 1982, and even then the incident was a bit dubious. They are still governed by UK police Laws, so having full-auto weapons is unlawful. What they don't appreciate is that they will go to prison if they use these weapons; they aren't trained to fire them and they have no legal right to carry them. Add to all this the fact that they have a large millitary support, they are a bit redundant. Caution.
