To Scab:

I wasn't even aware that there was the Civil Contingency Reaction Force until I was told I was in it!

There was a re-arrangement of units for the CCRF, and my unit was added to it. You are right though about knowing about these things before signing on the dotted line but I think that's the responsibility of the army to inform you rather than the potential soldier having to find out through their own research and the recruitment staff keeping schtum!

No, that's right. As I say, I only had 1 call out exercise in 3 years. We had no training in what to do if we were ever called out. I think the earlier reply in the thread of Whitehall box ticking exercise is probably, sadly, correct.

I also did the flood s in york some years ago with the reserves, wizzing around in a chinook dropping off sandbags. Could think of a worse way to spend a week.

Well yesterday John Hutton made a speech outlining some possible changes or "rebalancing" of the armed forces. Basically the development and manufacturing of unimportant equipment like Typhoons, Nimrods and Aircraft Carriers would be scrapped so that more funds can be thrown at "meeting the challenge of irregular warfare" (terrorism). This would be done by increasing the numbers of Special Forces and other counterinsurgency initiatives.
Maybe this is where the 6000 extra eyes or whatever it was will come from?
This of course is following the lead of the US, another example of Britain playing lap dog.

Oh yes! Using the reserve forces's capabilities for the civil contingency stuff. A force stuffed full of CBNR trained, medical trained and other useful skill's trained soldiers who can be deployed within hours.

I wonder whatever happened to that idea too.
It fell by the wayside when all the reservists were utilised to support the overstretched regulars in Iraq & Afghanistan!

Or 'cuts' but in a different name. Sack off another batallion or regiment, add in an extra squadron most likely!

Finally got a written response from teh Home Office re the 60000 shop workers training.

Essentially, their implementation plan is via NACTSO - NaCTSO National Counter Terrorism Security Office

No detail as to how they expect to implement it has been produced other than NACTSO is the lead agency.

So ... f&ck all will happen then...
