Default Advice Needed!

Hi guys

I am after some advice about breaking into CP or Surveillance work abroad (not interested in work in the UK).

I am a serving police officer with 5 years experience (Response, Surveillance, CID) and I have previously worked as a prison officer. I have no military experience or police firearms training.

I am interested in work (CP or surveillance or police training) in a hostile environment but without military experience I don’t know if this is realistic.

Could anyone recommend a route into these areas of work for someone with my background? I have researched some courses but before spending the money I would appreciate some advice on whether employment overseas as CP or Surveillance operative is a realistic prospect for me.

Cheers

MTJ

You could try to get out as a police trainer or EU trainer to Iraq, Balkans , Afghan.
AG used to hold the police training contract in Iraq... not sure if they still do and they were hiring mentors etc for the Basra region.
The EU still does some of the police training for the KPS in Kosovo.
Just a thought as a different path you might want to follow.

Lol? Don't they use that on dating sites, not that i've been on any mind! Anyway thanks everyone for the advice, will look into everything suggested.

Morrigan, your website says you have been involved in police training - can you tell me anymore, job requirements etc.

Cheers

Hi MTJ,

We are involved in the training of CP and HECPO to the KPS in Kosovo and to some of the UN High Risk Escort teams particularly in Mitrovica region.
With that most of the students on these courses are already serving UN cops. (CIVPOL) That comes as a matter of secondment from your home force and as such for the Kosovo mission it is open to Armed Police only, hence the UK contingent is made up from MOD police and previously RUC/PSNI.
For the EU secondments that is down to personal application and I am sure then upon offer of placement one needs to secure leave of absence or career break to attend as they are open to those serving currently. A lot of positions exist as police trainers to countries such as Bulgaria, Serbia (where we are involved in Riot Control) Montenegro , Albania etc.
If you are a trainer and have a skill that is required (CID Training is high on the list at present) you stand a very high chance.
In Iraq etc some of the PSC are doing the training , AG had the Iraq one but not sure if they still do , PAE has some but are mostly after US citizens and Dyncorp has many but again are after US Cits. Look around and if I can help you in any way let me know.

Thanks Mick, thats really helpful - CIVPOL training seems the best option for me. I've looked at the police secondments to Iraq and Afghan and they both require officers to complete the police tactical firearms course. I assume the same would apply for PSC's who provide police training to these regions.

I know the failure rate for the police course can be high and I know nothing about firearms at all - I am very keen to work overseas so would it be worth my while completing a tactical firearms course with you or any other decent training provider in order to give me a head-start. Any thoughts would be really appreciated.
